Health Promotion Self Employed Contractors role description, application criteria and deadline Background / Context Northern Ireland Chest Heart and Stroke (NICHS) is a local charity for the care and prevention of chest, heart and stroke illnesses. Our health promotion team aims to promote health, healthy lifestyles and improve quality of life through information, awareness raising and interventions in order to prevent the onset of chest, heart and stroke illnesses. The team works with young people, adults and with deprived communities in settings such as schools, workplaces and in the community. Our main interventions include health talks, health checks, chester’s challenge schools progamme and our health and homelessness service, all supported by online and offline health communications and campaigns. We are now looking to increase capacity within our dynamic health promotion team to support business continuity, to manage absence and to increase our health promotion reach and effectiveness. NICHS needs to have access to a group of flexible workers contracted to work on as when required basis, often at short notice, to: To cover for planned and unplanned shortfalls in staffing to ensure NICHS can deliver current work commitments in particular funded contracts with the private sector and the public sector To cover staff absence such as sickness leave etc. To cover brief unplanned increases in workload where cover cannot be provided by existing staff To increase health promotion capacity and engagement with individuals and communities across Northern Ireland Those who are self-employed for tax purposes may be classified as ‘workers’ for employment rights purposes We are now seeking to set up a database of approved self – employed health promotion contract workers who meet the criteria for this role defined in pages 2 – 4 of this document. Health Promotion Contractor The health promotion contractor will be expected to work with a range of audiences either in oneone or in groups sessions throughout Northern Ireland aimed at increasing public awareness of cardiovascular and respiratory disease. We are seeking to contract with people who are selfemployed for tax and public liability purposes and who are available to work in a flexible way to support the delivery of short and long-term programmes of work, often at short notice. You will be requested to indicate your availability in your application for this role. The day to day management of this role will be provided by the Health Promotion Service Coordinator who is accountable to the Public Health Director for NICHS. 1 Role Description for NICHS Health Promotion Contactors Role Title: Health Promotion Officer – Contract Worker Reports To: Health Promotion Service Coordinator Accountable To: Public Health Director Contract: Self Employed Contract Worker Hours: Contract Work, as and when required Remuneration: £15.00ph – not including travelling hours. Travel will be reimbursed at 45p per mile. The main responsibilities are: 1. To provide health checks in various locations as agreed with the Health Promotion Service Coordinator. 2. To provide advice, support and health promotion literature to clients, with an emphasis on healthy lifestyles and prevention of chest, heart and stroke conditions. 3. To adhere to NICHS policies and procedures ensuring equipment is properly maintained and materials are disposed of safely after use; ensuring strict hygiene procedures at all times. 4. To record health check data and ensuring that a strict data protection policy is adhered to, to ensure it is stored confidentially in line with NICHS’s data protection policy. 5. To provide monthly and other reports as requested to the Health Promotion Service Coordinator/Public Health Director and support evaluation and monitoring. 6. To provide follow up support to clients as required and refer to other services, as required. 7. To deliver health talks and / or workshops to groups of individuals in a range of settings including young people and adults. 8. To assist with online communications & marketing, if required. 9. To continuously review and keep up to date on the latest clinical guidance or developments relevant to this role. 10. To participate in clinical updates and training as required. 11. To represent NICHS in a professional capacity thriving towards excellence at all times in the delivery of high quality health promotion services tailored around the needs of our clients. 12. To actively engage with NICHS to help achieve the overall aims objectives and values of the charity. 13. To undertake any other duties as may reasonably be required. 2 14. Elegibility Essential Criteria: One year’s experience of working in a health promotion role Proven experience in delivering presentations or health talks to groups of people or any experience in public speaking Evidence of strong interpersonal skills, including excellent verbal and written communication skills, with an ability of relating to both individuals and groups Ability to use Microsoft Office, e-mail, internet and other technology including tablets and mobile phones for data input and communications Hold a valid driving license and have access to the use of a car or some other appropriate form of transport to carry out the duties of the role Personal Attributes: Treat people with dignity, respect and in a non-judgmental way Resilient and a fast learner Adhering to NICHS’s values which are caring, integrity, inclusion and excellence Desirable Criteria: Degree or qualification in health promotion, relevant health related field or in nursing Experience of delivering health checks Experience and knowledge of all three or at least one of chest, heart and stroke conditions Training or experience of counseling and / or health coaching Availability to work evenings/weekends if required. You will not be paid through PAYE and you don't have the same employment rights and responsibilities as NICHS employees.
