Grade 9 Astronomy Poster Project
Space Travel Poster Project
Option 1 - Challenges of Space Exploration
If humans wish to colonize on a planet or moon other than earth they will have to overcome
many challenges. These include but are not limited to:
1)
2)
3)
4)
5)
6)
7)
Keeping people physically healthy over a journey of many months or years
Maintaining mental health over a long journey
Surviving in an environment with no oxygen
Surviving the elements such as cold, wind and radiation
Surviving in an environment with less gravity than earth
Creating a food supply that will feed the population
Creating an energy source that will allow the population to have electrical power
Choose one of these challenges or another challenge if you would like and make a poster
explaining the challenge.
Your poster should be colourful and eye catching but should also give some important
information. It should include the following:
1. A title stating the challenge
2. A suitable illustration
3. A section explaining the challenge and what some of the difficulties are associated with
the challenge. What could happen if something goes wrong?
4. A section explaining what can be done to overcome the problem
5. References Cited
Each written section should give adequate information but should not be too detailed. The
poster should be attention getting and easy to read.
Option 2 – Travel Poster or Brochure for Another Planet
Imagine that it is a thousand years in the future and humans have colonized all planets in the
solar system (and even a few moons). You are a travel agent on one of the planets or moons in
the solar system and have been assigned the task of making a travel brochure to encourage
people to visit your planet. The brochure may contain some of the following information:
1)
2)
3)
4)
The name of your planet or moon
Basic information (it’s size, temperature and atmosphere)
A catchy phrase to help convince people to come to your planet
What there is to do and/or see on the planet or moon. May include seeing natural
wonders, leisure activities, sports, etc.
5) Tours or deals offered
6) Technology that is provided to overcome problems (e.g. a gravity neutralizer to stop you
from feeling crushed if you’re on Jupiter.
Your description of the moon or planet should be scientifically accurate and your tourist
information should be consistent with the characteristics of the planet. For example, don’t
describe Neptune as a beautiful sunny getaway with warm beaches.
