Grade 9 Astronomy Poster Project Space Travel Poster Project Option 1 - Challenges of Space Exploration If humans wish to colonize on a planet or moon other than earth they will have to overcome many challenges. These include but are not limited to: 1) 2) 3) 4) 5) 6) 7) Keeping people physically healthy over a journey of many months or years Maintaining mental health over a long journey Surviving in an environment with no oxygen Surviving the elements such as cold, wind and radiation Surviving in an environment with less gravity than earth Creating a food supply that will feed the population Creating an energy source that will allow the population to have electrical power Choose one of these challenges or another challenge if you would like and make a poster explaining the challenge. Your poster should be colourful and eye catching but should also give some important information. It should include the following: 1. A title stating the challenge 2. A suitable illustration 3. A section explaining the challenge and what some of the difficulties are associated with the challenge. What could happen if something goes wrong? 4. A section explaining what can be done to overcome the problem 5. References Cited Each written section should give adequate information but should not be too detailed. The poster should be attention getting and easy to read. Option 2 – Travel Poster or Brochure for Another Planet Imagine that it is a thousand years in the future and humans have colonized all planets in the solar system (and even a few moons). You are a travel agent on one of the planets or moons in the solar system and have been assigned the task of making a travel brochure to encourage people to visit your planet. The brochure may contain some of the following information: 1) 2) 3) 4) The name of your planet or moon Basic information (it’s size, temperature and atmosphere) A catchy phrase to help convince people to come to your planet What there is to do and/or see on the planet or moon. May include seeing natural wonders, leisure activities, sports, etc. 5) Tours or deals offered 6) Technology that is provided to overcome problems (e.g. a gravity neutralizer to stop you from feeling crushed if you’re on Jupiter. Your description of the moon or planet should be scientifically accurate and your tourist information should be consistent with the characteristics of the planet. For example, don’t describe Neptune as a beautiful sunny getaway with warm beaches.
