Title/Name: 5 Points

Biology Period D/F/G
Mr, Alvarez

Introduction: 20 Points
-
Background (1-1½ pages)
o Discuss a brief history of the discovery of DNA
o Your main focus should be on James Watson and Francis Crick
o What is DNA?
o What does DNA stand for?
o Where is DNA found
o What shape is DNA? (Yes, it looks like a ladder, but what is that called Scientifically?)
o What are the parts of DNA?
 What is the “backbone” what are the “bases”, etc.
o Briefly describe the Human Genome Project
o Purpose (1-2 sentences)
o What is the purpose of this lab?
o Hypothesis (1 sentence)
o What do you believe will happen (In statement form)
o DO NOT USE PRONOUNS (The hypothesis for this lab is…)
Materials/Methods: 20 Points
-
Once again, DO NOT list your materials and methods, they should flow together like a story
o The story should be in your own words; the procedure we performed in lab was DIFFERENT
than what was stated in the laboratory manual (ex. We did not use methylene blue and we did not
look at slides under the microscope). Make sure you make the necessary adjustments.
o DO NOT USE PRONOUNS (The stopper was placed on top of the flask…)
Results: 20 Points
o For your Results, I have allowed you to take a picture of what your DNA looks like. This will be
your Quantitative Results
 Make sure you label you picture as “Figure 1.”
 Label the DNA, the ethanol and the pellet in the picture
 Be sure to include a title of your figure next to where you type “Figure 1.”
o For your Qualitative Results, make sure you write 1-2 PARAGRAPHS describing what the
DNA looked like to your naked eye.
Discussion: 20 Points (1.5-2 pages)
-
-
Discuss your results
o Why did DNA look the way it looked in lab and not the way it looks in the textbook?
o Why was saltwater (saline solution) added to the liver in step 2?
 What would happen to the cells if they were bathed in water? (Think back to the plant
cells during the diffusion lab)
o Why was detergent (SDS solution) used on the Liver Cells in step 6?
o Why was alcohol (95% ethanol) added to the solution in step 9?
o What is a centrifuge and why was it used in this procedure?
How can DNA extraction benefit us in the medical field?
o Think in terms of Genetic Diseases
Accept/Reject Hypothesis
Conclusion
Reference: 5 Points
-
-
Include a References page that is SEPARATE from the rest of the lab
o Type the lab, save it, print the document, and close the document. Open a new word document,
type references, save that page, print it.
Include IN-TEXT Citations ESPECIALLY in your Introduction
Use APA Format
DO NOT PLAGIARIZE (It will result in an automatic zero and an honor code violation)
Neatness/Grammar/Formatting: 10 Points
