SEAC 6th Annual Open House: Session Descriptions (revised 10/22/14)
PRESCHOOL
PRESCHOOL: COME LEARN AND PLAY WITH US!: (1 hour 15 minutes) Opportunity to learn about the Office of Early Learning’s
Preschool Special Education Services. This session will give families valuable information regarding referral, evaluation, eligibility
process, service delivery and programming. Come learn and play with us!
PREPARING FOR TRANSITION TO KINDERGARTEN: (25 minute session) Information, expectations, and roles to prepare for the
transition from preschool to kindergarten. This session will provide an overview of kindergarten services for students on both the
Extended Common Core and Common Core.
ELEMENTARY
ELEMENTARY PROGRAMMING FOR STUDENTS ON THE COMMON CORE: (55 minute session) Information about programs and
programming options available to students with disabilities in grades K-5 who are following the Common Core. Topics will include:
Cross-Categorical (Regular, Resource & Separate) and regional programs (CCK, ED, HI, VI, and ID-Mild).
ELEMENTARY EXTENDED COMMON CORE: (55 minute session) Information about instruction and activities in Level I (Grades K-2)
and Level II (Grades 3-5) classes including AU, ID-Moderate, and ID-Severe. Presenters will discuss topics including the
implementation of the Extended Common Core, use of structure in the learning environment, development of
language/communication skills, daily living, social, behavioral, motor, and leisure skills.
SECONDARY
MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAMMING FOR STUDENTS ON THE COMMON CORE: (55 minute session) Information about programs and
programming options available to students with disabilities in grades 6-8. Topics will include: Cross-Categorical (Regular, Resource &
Separate), In-Class Resource, Curriculum Assistance, Behavior Support and transition planning in the IEP beginning at age 14.
HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMMING FOR STUDENTS ON THE COMMON CORE: (55 minute session) Information about programs and
programming options available to students with disabilities in grades 9-12. Topics will include: graduation options and
requirements for Future Ready Core and Occupational Course of Study; programming including Co-Teaching (ICR), Curriculum
Assistance, and Behavior Support; and information on transition to post-school life.
SECONDARY EXTENDED COMMON CORE: (55 minute session) Information about instruction and activities in Level III (Grades 6-8)
and Level IV (Grades 9-12) classes including AU, ID-Moderate, ID-Severe and MU. Presenters will discuss topics including
implementation of the Extended Common Core, use of structure in the learning environment, development of
language/communication, self-help, behavioral, motor, daily living, leisure & social skills and development of pre-vocational,
vocational and transition-related skills.
TRANSITION PLANNING: (55 minute session) Crucial information for IEP planning for all students in middle and high school.
Presenters will provide an overview of the goal setting process used to prepare students for life after high school. This will include
information about assessments and the development of transition plans, including: post-secondary goals, community experiences,
career & vocational skills and independent living.
POST-SCHOOL ADULT LIVING
ADULT DD SERVICES: (25 minute session) Explanation of services available to support adults with disabilities in their homes,
communities, and work places. In addition, presenters will address the process for accessing services.
POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION: (25 minute session) Information about accommodations offered through Disability Support
Services at the community college and university level and how to access those services. Presenters will share information specific
to Wake Technical Community College and NC State University.
SOCIAL SECURITY WORK INCENTIVES: (25 minute session) Overview of options for students with disabilities who receive
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Income (SSDI). Items addressed will be Substantial Gainful Activity
(SGA), Plans for Achieving Self Support (PASS) and Impairment Related Work Expense (IRWE).
VOCATIONAL REHABILITATION: (25 minute session) Information about the NC Division of Vocational Rehabilitation which provides
counseling, training, education, job placement, assistive technology and other services. These services are provided to individuals
with disabilities to assist them in living independently, finding a job and maintaining employment.
OTHER
FBA/BIP: (1 hour 40 minute session) Information on what a functional behavioral assessment and behavior intervention plan are
and how they can be implemented to best serve a student in any classroom setting. Presenters will address developing the function
of the student’s behavior, identifying the context in which the behavior occurs and developing a behavior intervention plan.
NORTH CAROLINA STATE IMPROVEMENT PROJECT (NCSIP) FOR LITERACY AND MATH: (55 minute session) Overview of the NCSIP
project and how WCPSS supports teachers in providing instruction using research/evidence based literacy and math resources.
