Reabold Reporter NOVEMBER 2012 Saturday Social Welcome back to the grass courts, which look magnificent and to Drew Thornton our set organiser. An updated format/guide for Drew should see more even and fun sets. Surprises could also be in store. Open Day We were very honoured to have the Official Opening performed by Ron Alexander (Director of DSR). Special guests Ron Alexander (Dept. Sport & Recreation), Yvonne Furner (Acton North) & Simon Withers (Mayor Town of Cambridge) As we anticipated the opening of our beloved grass courts someone forgot to let the weather man know that we were praying for sunshine. Although the heavens opened and we didn’t get to play on the grass this did not deter some tennis die-hards who patiently waited for a break in the weather and played on the hard-courts. During the evening 85 members & guests were treated to a sumptuous buffet dinner of chicken & yummy salads provided by the guests who then enjoyed strawberries and cream for dessert. A huge thank you to everyone who supported this event, and who bought along salads to share with everyone. Also a huge thank you to the Social committee comprising of Tania Hayward, Dale Croker, Sally Hendriks, Wendy Dallas-Smith, Helen Ashenden, Andrea Hennessey & Angela Kempkes for their tireless efforts with not only this function but ALL the social functions held at the Club during 2012. You are simply the best!!! 2012 President’s Cocktail Party Our social event of the year was held on Friday 16th November. 160 guests were treated to a wonderful night coupled with great weather, fabulous food and outstanding entertainment. The inaugural Reabold Cup was a huge success. The field of 10 horses: 1 Tony Glass MR PRESIDENT 2 Dean Williams THE DEAN MACHINE 3 Judy Kozak LADY’S CHAMP 4 Sue O’Keefe BIRTHDAY GIRL 5 Dale Croker CHAMPAGNE BUBBLE 6 Tania Hayward VERSATILE MISS 7 Dimitri Bacopanos THE ATHENIAN 8 Steve Mack THE MACK ATTACK 9 Harry Phillips DR HARRY 10 Clive Wilderspin LIVING LEGEND All were paraded prior to the race, which spurred on a huge rush to the Tote. The race was then called by legendary race caller John Hunt who had the crowd in fits of laughter. We all thought that “Mack Attack” (Steve Mack), who was a definite outsider, may have just pulled off the race of his life but he was pipped at the post by “Birthday Girl” (Sue O’Keefe). A lot of fun was had by all. Thanks to the lovely Tote Assistants Leah Crabb & Nina Sergeev. Many thanks to our major sponsor, Kailis Brothers Leederville, for their fine food and Little Red Hen, Mount Claremont, for their delicious goodies. Both Leanne Foley and club member Billie Court entertained us with their fabulous vocals throughout the night culminating in a duet. The night’s success is due to a lot of preparation and work behind the scenes. The Function subcommittee consisted of: Mike Hendriks Sally Hendriks Tania Hayward Dale Croker Martina Alessandro A special mention and thanks to our very competent Wait staff, (the u/ 18 Div 1 Pennant Team) Ryan Hayward, Nathan Hayward, Leighton Lilford and Sam Hadlow, and Bar hands Drew Thornton & Mitchell Carey. Also thanks to Claude Hayward and Andrea Hennessy who assisted with the set up and to Mark Casey, who always so generously provides the linen. Without everyone’s assistance the event would not have run as smoothly. We look forward to this event in 2013. MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A VERY HAPPY AND SAFE NEW YEAR TO ALL MEMBERS AND FAMILIES from the President, Board Members and Manager of the club, with our very best wishes. Christmas Party-Saturday December 15th Please make note in your diaries to come along the final RTC function of the year. This year’s Christmas Party promises to be a very family orientated affair, with a visit from Santa, Christmas Carol’s sung by our lovely club member Billie Court and a usual buffet feast. Please contact Tania Hayward with your RSVP’s to belind@bigpond.com THE REABOLD TENNIS CLUB A chronicle of Its First Half Century Since 1956 Popular Reabold member, political commentator, former lecturer, Honorary Professor Edith Cowan University, Adjunct Professor John Curtin University, West Coast Eagles supporter and crafty left handed tennis player Dr Harry Phillips has dedicated himself to write the above Chronicle over the last few years. The launch will be on Sunday 17th February 2013 from 2.30pm onwards. Please diarise this date. More details will follow from the committee who are arranging what will be a fantastic day to launch this history. The intent is to contact past members with whom we have lost contact with and invite them back to say hello and see where the club is today. Shirley Lantzke, Brian and Marg Nevard, Clive Wilderspin and Rob Wallman are all involved in the committee and in making personal contact. Should you run into anyone with a Reabold connection please invite them and pass their name onto Jim Ashenden chairperson of the organising committee. Jim will then make formal contact with details when they are available for general circulation. It will be necessary to obtain prior commitment so that the venue can be properly set up. Women in Tennis – Gala Day 17th October The club was fortunate to host one of the Gala Days, a fundraiser for “Women in Tennis”. The day was very successful, & monies raised are used to assist women and girls in tennis needing financial help. A letter of appreciation was received to thank the club and Groundsman, Sean Kehane, for the great courts. This was an extremely successful tournament, a massive event & certainly the biggest we have ever hosted - 198 Players with 267 entries, over 2 venues – Reabold & Hale School. Leslee Holmes, the consummate professional and wonderful Tournament Director, and Martina Alessandro, her willing assistant, worked tirelessly over the 4 days. The accomplishment wouldn’t have been possible without the help & assistance of numerous club members. A thank you morning tea was arranged for all involved on Tuesday 30th October. For this reason it was decided to run the majority of events at the beginning of the pennant season rather than the end. It also meant running the tournament in cooler weather and without the inevitable clashes with winter sport trials. All pennant players for the current 2012/13 season were expected to play and a new “opt out” system was trialled. Fortunately very few players opted out and we had a very strong turnout on Sunday 21st October for the following events. The Green and Orange Ball events will be run on Saturday the 1st December. Thanks must go to Tony Glass who helped out all day in the Tournament Director’s box and to all the players and parents who attended the matches and stayed for the presentation of trophies. A new format has seen the kids battle weekly to gain points for their respective teams, in tennis skills and knowledge. Mid-week Ladies The ladies held their own Open Day on Tuesday 16th October, and were officially the first players to enjoy the grass courts. The weather was perfect and their tournament went very well, followed by a sumptuous buffet lunch. Ball Kids At the next Hopman Cup, 2 of our junior members, Courtney & Cameron McVeigh, have been accepted as Ball Kids. This will be a very exciting event at the wonderful new arena. Department of Sport & Recreation Grant The club has been successful in obtaining a Grant from the DSR which will assist (in conjunction with the Town of Cambridge) to replace our ancient fences. The plans to undertake the changes will be early in the new year. Shed Shelving Many thanks to Geoff Stooke who donated a massive amount of shelving and the carpenter’s time to assemble same in the groundsman shed. This has freed up an enormous amount of space and will also allow us to store club archives in an orderly fashion. With appreciation and thanks Geoff. Club Break-in/Theft In the early morning hours of Monday November 19, the club was unfortunately broken in to. In all we sustained a damaged kitchen shutter, broken Office window and loss of some cash. It could have been much worse, but the alarm activated and computer and office equipment were saved. The security monitoring service deployed the police very quickly and awoke 2 of our Board members from their sleep. This is an opportune time to ensure the diligence of all members being aware and taking responsibility of your club and securing the club house at all times on departure. Court Usage over Christmas Even though the Christmas wind-up is December 15th, the Saturday social organized tennis will continue on over the festive season. Subject to the groundsman’s availability it is envisaged that the majority of grass courts and all plexicushion courts will be available on the weekends of 22nd 29th December and 5th January. Grass Condition Report The Club commissioned a report on the condition of the grass courts in early October 2012. We received the report on the 17th October. Following are extracts from the report: Observations Turf in general is currently in good condition and recovering from renovation. All grass appeared to be very healthy with no obvious signs of disease or other poor health. Surface appeared relatively firm, however no specific bounce test was conducted. A distinct colonisation of the couch grass and a number of different couch strains was apparent. The eastern end of the courts may suffer from a lack of important morning sunlight that is crucial to Turf grass especially if other stress factors are endured. Some varieties of couch had recovered (or were in the process of recovering) faster than others. This was leaving the sparser areas of court 11 in particular, exposed and behind in their recovery. Results of Nematode test (Court 11) The results of the nematode test have indicated a very high level of the very damaging Sting nematode. There is no doubt that this would be severely restricting recovery from renovations and general wear and tear. Results of Nutrient tests Nutrition levels are more than acceptable and would in no way be a major cause of any poor performance of the courts. However, some fine tuning and slight improvement could come from increasing Phosphorus, Potassium, Magnesium and copper levels to within optimum range. Outcomes It is in my opinion, based on the information obtained, that the courts are in very good condition. They appear to be recovering well from renovation with no obvious hindrance to the health or growth of the turf. The sparser areas of turf are clearly just coarser varieties of couch with less density. Given all the conditions these will take longer to cover. Although the nematode problem may be possible to reduce with chemical treatment, the main problem of inconsistent recovery could be attributed to the various colonised areas of couch grass present. Different varieties of couch have varying growth habits and abilities to tolerate wear. This makes it very difficult to apply one maintenance style that suits all varieties. One other notable factor could be the position of court 11 and whether its far eastern location could be the cause of any poorer performance due to past/present issues relating to early morning shade. Recommendation Treat for nematodes and suggest using chemical Agador. Improve nutrition status as previously mentioned. Get a further nematode test from a healthier area as a comparison and an indication of what effect the nematodes are having. Long term, look at replacing the turf species with a pure strain of grass that is best suited. This will be far easier to manage and provide a more consistent surface as well as making overall management of the turf better. The report and testing (most expensive part) cost $1000. The nematode spray Agador is new to the market after 5 – 6 years testing as previous sprays had become ineffective. It has only just been approved by Australian authorities and we have sprayed all courts (first of 3 fortnightly sprays) on Monday 19th Nov. Total cost of chemical just over $1000. Should you wish to view the whole report please make contact with Martina. Martina’s Annual Leave Martina will be away from Wednesday December 5th until Tuesday January 8th 2013 and the office will be unattended. For any urgent enquiries, please contact the appropriate Board Member and for coaching and court hire please contact Total Tennis 0414 155 533. Shoe Tags This year’s shoe tags are bright orange, and must be worn at all times. This will ensure membership recognition with priority court usage and court hire. Court Hire All members are to be reminded that if you wish to play tennis on the plexicushion courts during this winter season, it is imperative that you book a court, as courts are at optimum usage. Night hire for lights is $5.00 per court per hour. For bookings please call 0414 155 533. Balls If any members wish to purchase new Wilson Tennis Balls, they are available from Martina in the office for $10 per can of 4. This will be an ongoing benefit to members.
