HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES 1. You must not work with any substance which may be hazardous to your health unless: You have a COSHH assessment (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) You are aware of the precautions to be taken All necessary protective measures are in place You have the appropriate PPE and know how to use it 2. Always read the COSHH assessment, labels on containers and packaging and look out for the danger symbols. 3. Follow the instructions in the COSHH assessment – these should be the same as on the label. 4. If labels are missing or damaged, report the matter to your supervisor. 5. Never mix two substances together unless the instructions say it is safe to do so. 6. Report any leakage or spillage to your supervisor, which should then be cleared up in accordance with the instructions in the COSHH assessment. 7. Dispose of surplus substances only in accordance with the COSHH assessment or the manufacturer’s instructions – do not put them down drains unless the COSHH assessment specifically states that the substance can be disposed of in this way. 8. Be particularly careful about personal hygiene – do not smoke while handling hazardous substances, and always wash before eating or drinking. 9. Report any defect in the system of work.
