Communication of general laboratory and analytical issues to the Laboratory Manager. 1 b) Communication – written & electronic What is communicated to whom? Provision of data in spreadsheet format to the Laboratory Manager and basic report writing when requested. 2 Teamwork and motivation In which teams is the role-holder involved and what is their main role in the team? The role-holder will be an important member of the ********* team, assisting the Laboratory Manager in meeting the analytical needs of the wider group. 3 Liaison and networking What are the role’s liaison contacts (outside of the above teams) and for what purpose? The role-holder will be expected to liaise with members of the host lab to help ensure the efficient and safe running of the laboratory. Within the department the role-holder will be expected to liaise with other research groups in response to enquiries. What network groups is the role involved in and for what purpose? 4 Service delivery In what way does the role need to be proactive or explore customer needs? The role holder will help the Laboratory Manager ensure that the lab analytical processes operate smoothly and deliver reliable results that meet quality standards. How does the role contribute to setting standards or levels of service? 5 Key Decisions What individual decisions are taken? What decisions are taken jointly with others? Individual: responsible for carrying out tasks allocated in a timely manner, prioritising tasks in order to maximise efficiency. Joint: Agreeing maintenance schedules and task allocations with the Laboratory Manager. Advice on analytical methods will be provided to other members of the research group. What advice is given & to whom? 6 Planning and organising resources Does the role-holder plan/prioritise their own work? If so how? What planning or co-ordination of others’ work is undertaken? As mentioned above the ability to plan/prioritise their own work is important. This may involve the ability to co-ordinate the use of a number of analytical methods to meet the needs of a particular project in a timely manner. The role holder will be working in a cross-institution environment and so will need to accommodate the work of others and be able to negotiate work plans to suit all. What event or project planning is there? 7 8 Initiative and problem solving What typical problems are faced by the role-holder? What is the most complex type of problem? Analysis and research What checking, investigating, analysis of data or information and research is required of the role? Typical problems will be the delivery of analyses in a timely manner. This may involve the complex synchronisation of a number of analytical techniques to achieve this goal. The role-holder will be able to interpret basic analytical data in order to identify issues with quality control. 2 9 Sensory and physical demands What equipment is used that requires use of the senses? What physical effort is required? 10 Work environment Where does the role-holder normally work eg office, laboratory? What hazards is the role-holder exposed to? Uses a computer daily, and this involves input of lab results into the lab database. Emailing results to the Laboratory Manager and others. Assistance with the regular servicing of analytical equipment. Occasional field work to assist with the servicing and maintenance of analytical field equipment. The role-holder will work in a laboratory environment, occasionally outdoors. The role holder will be exposed to a number of hazards relevant to the field of analytical chemistry including the use of hazardous chemicals. The role-holder will not be directly responsible for the safety of others however their ability to work safely in this environment will impact on their fellow workers.
