5HD382 Chapters on Economic History: Principles and Practice in Classical World’s Economy Evropský sociální fond Praha & EU: Investujeme do vaší budoucnosti Garant doc. PhDr. František Stelllner, Ph.D. Vyučující Dr. PhDr. Athanasios Sideris, Ph.D. Course Aim The course presents the main characteristics of the economy of ancient Greece, in its social, cultural and spatiotemporal context. It is primarily an economic subject, which however can be understood only within the particularities of the given society, with its statutes, institutions and customs. The enormous progress of studies on the economic history of Antiquity during the last decades allows us to follow, and see through a modern eye, such issues as the production and accumulation, the consumption and circulation of goods and wealth, in close connection to the socio-political development of the Greek city-states, towards the Hellenistic kingdoms and the Roman Empire. The course insists on the birth-moment of several economic categories, definitions and approaches, which exercised capital influence on the evolution of the economic thinking and the economy itself in the following centuries. Such issues include the relations between the public and the private economic spheres, the invention of the money, banking and loans, and the first attempts towards a globalization. Course Prerequisites Only a very generic historical knowledge of Antiquity is expected. No need for detailed knowledge of political history of ancient Greece.
