Guidelines for Abstract Submission:
The program will be organized along the 4 main objectives listed below in bold. In
submitting your abstract, please check one of these main objectives and any of the specific
objectives below it that best reflects your submission.
1. IDENTIFY BEST PRACTICES AND DESCRIBE THE METHODS IN WHICH PHPS CAN ACHIEVE
ACCOUNTABILITY, CONSISTENCY AND EXCELLENCE
Discuss common goals of physician health programs and licensure boards,
including promotion of patient safety
Explain alternative options to 12-step programs to participants with other
belief systems who present to physician health programs
Demonstrate strategies for addressing the media on physician health matters
Employ quality management principles to preserve the credibility of physician
health programs
Explain behavioral health models for monitoring physicians and other health
care professionals to promote patient safety
Describe evidence-based case management methods utilized by physician
health programs
Describe the key confidentiality laws that govern PHPs and identify the best
practices
Identify financial strategies to sustain effective physician health program
services
Evaluate best practices for random drug testing and identify new
methodologies
2. COMPARE DIFFERENT TREATMENT MODALITIES FOR SUBSTANCE USE AND CO-OCCURRING
DISORDERS AND DEFINE OUTCOMES
Compare the efficacy of different inpatient vs. outpatient vs. other treatment
modalities for physicians and other health care professionals
Evaluate the transition from DSM IV to DSM-V and the application to physician
health programs
Discuss prevention strategies for the prescription drug and accidental
overdose epidemic
3. DISCUSS STRATEGIES FOR IDENTIFYING AND ASSESSING COGNITION ISSUES
Identify effective outreach methods for identifying common neurological,
psychiatric, and other medical illnesses that may affect the aging physician

4. DESCRIBE PROGRAMS THAT PROMOTE HEALTHY LIFESTYLE IN THE PROFESSION AND
STRATEGIES THAT REDUCE BURNOUT IN PHYSICIANS
Explain and apply the effect of provider wellness activities on physical and
mental health and their impact on patient behavior
Define the concept of resilience and identify strategies that can be used to
enhance health and reduce burnout
Relate relapse prevention strategies to participants, which will promote
physician health and recovery

Type of Submission:
Paper Session
Workshop Session
Poster Session
Paper Session: Oral presentations of scientific, data-based findings. Presentations may be
grouped into related sessions. Individual presentations will be followed by time for panel
questions and discussion. Presentations are likely to be of 20-30 minutes duration, and
handouts are encouraged.
Workshop Session: Interactive sessions designed to improve skills and knowledge among
those working in the area of physician health. Subject matter is open but should be
designed to address specific, topical issues. Workshops may range from 60-120 minutes
and handouts are encouraged and presenters are responsible for providing handout
materials onsite.
Poster Session: Written presentation of data-based research. Presentations will allow for
discussion between the author and interested parties in an informal setting. Posters should
be easily readable from a distance of one yard, and should be prepared to use an allocated
space of one yard. Handouts are encouraged and presenters are responsible for providing
handout materials onsite. Presenters are also responsible for producing their own poster.
** Presenters may be asked to adjust format or time based on meeting agenda
needs.
