Interactions in Ecosystems Land Biomes Author: Misty D. Jolly Date: October 30, 2011, Day Three Grade Level: 5th Subject: Science Frameworks: Strand 2: Life Science Standard 4: Populations and Ecosystems Students shall demonstrate and apply knowledge of populations and ecosystems using appropriate safety procedures, equipment, and technology. o LS.4.5.1 Distinguish among and model organisms populations communities ecosystems biosphere o LS.4.5.5 Examine the role of limiting factors on the carrying capacity of an ecosystem: Food Space Water Shelter Overview: This lesson will introduce the different types of biomes and how organisms have structures or behaviors that help them live in these biomes. The student will observe their biome and then they will record the data. Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to familiarize students with the different characteristics of land biomes, and how animals adapt to the conditions of the biomes. Objectives: The student describes characteristics of land biomes and gives examples of plants and animals that live in each. The student explains how organisms have adapted to the physical conditions in their biome. The student will apply their knowledge of biomes to create their own biome Activities: Observe Biome in a Baggie experiments Answer Page 131 and 133 checkpoints during class discussion Students will create biomes through the use of a foldable Watch BrainPOP on Land Biomes (http://www.brainpop.com/science/earthsystem/landbiomes/preview.weml) Resources/Materials Needed: Text book Science notebook Lab sheet Construction Paper PowerPoint
