Renal Dialysis Centers Earn “5-Diamond” Status for Patient Safety HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital’s Renal Dialysis Centers, located at both HSHS Sacred Heart & St. Joseph’s hospitals, have earned renewed status as a “5-Diamond Patient Safety Facility” by Renal Network 11. As the quality control arm for Medicare, Renal Network 11 (serving MI, MN, ND, SD, and WI) is one of 18 Networks in the U.S., established by the federal government to improve the quality of dialysis and kidney transplant services for people with end-stage renal disease. “Our patients and staff continue to work together to ensure we have the safest environment possible for dialysis treatments,” said Mary Richbourg, RN, MSN, Director of our Renal Dialysis Centers. Diamonds are earned by completing educational modules designed to build a culture of patient safety within the dialysis unit, promote patient safety values, create an awareness of patient safety issues, and help the dialysis unit learn more about specific areas of patient safety. The 5-Diamond Patient Safety Program is endorsed by the American Nephrology Nurses' Association, the Renal Physicians Association and the National Renal Administrators Association. 2. Hospitals Receive WHA Gold Level Achievement HSHS St. Joseph’s and Sacred Heart hospitals received the Wisconsin Hospital Association Partners for Patients Collaborative Gold level of achievement for three years of hard work, commitment and dedication, said Kelly Court, WHA Chief Quality Officer. In those three years, Wisconsin hospital teams came together to learn evidence-based practices and shared what they know about reducing hospital-acquired harm and unnecessary readmissions. “The amount of collaboration that has taken place through the WHA partnership has been unique, and more importantly, highly effective,” Court said. “As a result of this collaboration, 86 hospitals achieved gold and four hospitals achieved the bronze level.” For more details on WHA 2015 improvement initiatives, visit www.whaquality.org. 3. Safety Message of the Week: Blood-Borne Exposures Q: Why is it important to contact the House Supervisor immediately after a blood-borne exposure, such as contaminated needlesticks and sharps exposures (or have a colleague assist you with this if you are unable to do so)? A: The House Supervisor plays a critical role in obtaining information about the source so appropriate treatment can be given. Q: What do you need to tell the House Supervisor? A: Give the name of the person exposed and the source name and location (if known) as soon as possible after the exposure. HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital 1. New Grant Aids Development of Adolescent Mental Health Programs The Friends of Sacred Heart Hospital are excited to announce that Sacred Heart Hospital was recently awarded a matching grant from The Otto Bremer Foundation — totaling $100,000. The grant, which will include an additional $100,000 matched by the Friends of Sacred Heart over the next two years, is designated to help address the behavioral health needs of children, ages 18 years and younger, that are cared for by Sacred Heart’s Adolescent Behavioral Health Services. For those interested in helping, this is an outstanding opportunity to have your generous donation doubled to help support our area’s youth. As a main priority identified during the hospital’s Community Health Needs Assessment in 2012, adolescent mental health services have since become a major point of emphasis here at Sacred Heart. The good news is that although our children and youth are the population most at risk to adopting poor health behaviors, they also possess the greatest opportunity for successful intervention. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, nearly 12% of people age 18 or older in Western Wisconsin suffer from serious psychological distress. This startling statistic makes it ever more important to reach these individuals at a younger age — setting them on the correct path toward a healthy and bright future. Those interested in helping the Friends Office raise the matching funds for this grant or other projects should contact the Friends of Sacred Heart Hospital at 715-717-4925. 2. Construction Update: 2-North Oncology Swaps Locations With 8-West Ortho-Surgical Construction will begin in two weeks for the 2-North Oncology Unit and 8-West OrthoSurgical Unit to switch locations. The purpose of this change is to not only provide greater efficiency between orthopedic surgery patients and their recovery rooms, but to also offer our Oncology patients additional privacy on a more secluded floor. In addition, the switch will allow for minor cosmetic upgrades to be made to both units before patients transition to their new rooms. First, Ortho-Surgical has moved temporarily to 3-North while renovations are completed on 8-West. When complete, Oncology will move to 8-West while renovations are completed on 2-North. At that time, Ortho-Surgical will move to 2-North. Construction is expected to be completed in approximately six weeks. If you have any questions if this will affect your area, please contact your department supervisor. Chapel Hallway Closure Beginning next week, the chapel hallway will be closed for construction between the two sets of fire doors near the chapel entrance. The renovations, which include adding additional fire-separation material in the ceiling, should last for about two weeks. While this work is being completed, the chapel entrance and the hallway going to the Chapel and POB will be closed, except for emergency egress. During this time, people can access the Chapel and the POB by going to the Lower Level and using the stairwell or elevator in the POB. If you have any questions about this project, please contact your department supervisor. 3.
