Lesson Plan Name: Ms. Erin Koyl Standard : oceans and climates Grade Level: 7th grade Lesson Title: Oceanic temperatures affecting the different climates on Earth THE TEACHING PROCESS: Lesson Overview: After completion of the lesson: -By answering questions students will be able to orally demonstrate an understanding of how climate is affected by ocean temperatures. -The students will have an understanding of why the oceans temperatures are affecting the climates here on Earth. -The students will have a better understanding of upwelling and how it affects the temperature of the oceans -The students will have a better understanding of how winds play a role in the distributions of ocean temperatures affecting climates on Earth. List of Materials: clear cake pans, small fans, thermometers, warm water, pencil and paper for each student to answer questions from the teacher. Instructional Sequence: Phase One: Engage the Learner The activities I will be starting with to get the students attention are to ask a few questions to the students as to whether any of them have been to the ocean. I would also ask the students what the winds felt like while they were there.I would draw a picture on the dry erase board or chalk board to demonstrate what is happening as the winds are blowing over the water and the whole process. I would take the students through the whole process from each step as I prefer to the picture on the board. Phase two: Explore the Concept: Next, the students will encounter a demonstration given by the teacher that was drawn on the board. The students will also be able to do the demonstration in groups of two after I give the demonstration myself. The demonstration will give the concept of what is really happening during the whole process. I will let them talk in there groups as to what happened in there demonstration. How the demonstration works is that you will fill a clear cake pan half way up with warm water. You will put the thermometer in the warm water to make sure to see the temperature is arm enough. You will put the fan up to the pan and turn in on low to show the fan as wind to show that the warm water will be released as energy up into the wind. Phase three: Explain the Concept and Define the Terms When the students are finished with the demonstration I would give the students an explanation as to why the oceans temperatures do affect the climates on Earth. I would also state that the winds blowing over the surface of the water (ocean) drive the major ocean currents. The ocean then releases energy to the atmosphere. I would also give an explanation on upwelling and what that does do the oceans. I would also give an overview of currents and what that causes. Phase Four: Elaborate on the Concept I would go over the process again using the picture on the board and ask the students questions and what they think about how the oceanic temperate affect the climates on Earth. I would also ask each group what they came up with when they were doing the demonstration. Phase five: Evaluate students’ Understanding of the Concept The final of the lesson plan would be giving the students questions on what they have learned. I would give them verbally while they have to write the answer but the students will also have to give the answers verbally.
