Weather can vary

seasons, natural

Includes: weather
patterns from year to
year
Climate can vary
because: oceans, winds,
bodies of water, air and
ocean currents
3. Places in the low latitides or tropics have hot climates because they get direct sunlight. Places in the high
latitudes or polar regions have cold climates because their sunlight is indirect.
4. Can wind and water affect climate? How? Give an example. They spread heat around the globe as they
move-cold air sinks and hot air rises. Without water and wind the tropics would overheat.
5. Can oceans affect climate? How? They help distribute Earth’s heat and they shape climates. Ocean currents
move water away from the Equator and cold water moves toward the Equator.
6. Global wind patterns help create ocean currents.
7. What warm current is in the Atlantic Ocean? Which direction does it travel and what does it do? The Gulf
Stream, in the Atlantic Ocean, travels northeast away from the tropics. It carries warm water all the way from
the equator to western Europe. That warm water gives western Europe its mild climate compaired to the other
climates at the same latitude.
8. What current runs along the coast of South America? Which direction does it travel and how does is affect
the country of Chile? The Peru Current moves north from Antarctica along the coast of South America. It
affects the country of Chile by changing the climate to a cooler climate even though it is close to the equator.
9. Explain how temperature can affect the land it is near. Water takes longer to heat and cool therefore areas
around water have a different climate than areas that are not around water.
10. What are the storms that form over the Pacific Ocean? The Atlantic Ocean?
