Developing an annotated bibliography:
Each student must create their own annotated bibliography, using MLA format (see below), with at
least 6 primary sources and 4 secondary sources. Students should consider community libraries,
college or community college libraries, or even resources available in NAU Special Archives, ASU,
or the U of A. Interviews and other “outside of the box” sources are encouraged. Local and state
museums can be useful and have many great resources as well. Internet sources are fine to use,
provided they can be authenticated. Wikipedia, about.com, and other “general knowledge” sources
are not legitimate resources. You may use internet sources such as “Bibme” to help you create a
bibliography. You can also find others by going to Google search and entering “citation generator.”
FYI: If you use the EBSCO database, it will create a citation for you, but you will need to add your
annotation.
Annotations:
Each source must be correctly cited and contain an annotation. Annotations should be 3+ sentences
and include:
1. Is the source primary or secondary?
2. What parts of the source are relevant to your topic/how did the source help you?
3. How the source is important to your topic.
Works Cited Requirements:
References cited in the text of a research paper must appear at the end of the paper in a Works Cited
list or bibliography. This list provides the information necessary to identify and retrieve each source
that specifically supports your research.
 Arrange entries in alphabetical order by authors' last names (surnames), or by title for
sources without authors.
 Capitalize the first word and all other principal words of the titles and subtitles of cited
works listed. (Do not capitalize articles, prepositions, coordinating conjunctions, or the "to"
in infinitives.)
 Shorten the publisher's name; for example, omit business abbreviations (Co., Inc.), and
descriptive words (Press, Publisher).
 When multiple publishers are listed, include all of them, placing a semicolon between each.
 When more than one city is listed for the same publisher, use only the first city.
 Use the conjunction "and," not an ampersand [&], when listing multiple authors of a single
work.
 Indentation: Align the first line of the entry flush with the left margin, and indent all
subsequent lines (5 to 7 spaces) to form a "hanging indent."

Using MLA format, sources of information that have been used in your research must be listed on a
“Works Cited” page (this is commonly referred to as the bibliography). The format of this page is
very specific and you will lose points in your page or citations are not properly formatted
and/or punctuated!
