Carl Bendorf- Iowa Young Birders - NEW
Young birders ages 8-18 are welcome on a field trip offered by Iowa Young Birders
(www.iowayoungbirders.org). Young birders under 12 must be accompanied by parent/guardian. Meet
at 9 a.m. at the Preserve Headquarters. This field trip will last until 12:00. Please dress appropriately
and bring a water bottle. There is no charge to participate but advance registration for the young birder

Jason Titcomb- Archaeology of Broken Kettle Grasslands- NEW
Jason Titcomb, Curator of Archaeology at the Sanford Museum in Cherokee, will be discussing
Archaeology of Broken Kettle Grasslands.
Doris Swanson- Dutch oven Cooking- NEW
Doris Swanson and family will be demonstrating Dutch oven cooking throughout the day. Enjoy a free
sample at the corral!
Doug Chafa- Fire Equipment Demonstration
Doug Chafa, Wildlife Biologists for the Iowa DNR will be on hand to explain the benefits of prescribed
fire and the different parts of fire equipment that is used for prescribed firefighting.
Teresa Kruid- Wildlife Exhibit
Teresa Kruid is a Naturalist for Woodbury County Conservation. Teresa will bring a variety of critters for
visitors to observe.
Kay Neumann, Saving our Avian Resources (SOAR)
Kay Neumann will be sharing her knowledge about Bald Eagles in Iowa and how current populations are
affected by lead poisoning. Kay will bring a Bald Eagle that has been affected by lead poisoning.
Bill Zales- Plant Hike
Local expert and landowner, Bill Zales will lead visitors on a hike around the visitor center and identify
different plant species.
Mike Greiner- Photography Session
Mike Greiner will share his love and knowledge as a nature photographer with visitors. This field trip
will lead participants on a short walk around Broken Kettle Grasslands. Mike will also be bringing
samples of his photography to share.
Eileen Bader Hall- Aquatic Exploration
Eileen Bader Hall is the Freshwater Conservation Manager for TNC. On the aquatic tour visitors will have
the chance to get in the water to catch and observe life within the pond and learn about their
fascinating life cycles and adaptations for surviving life in the water. During the aquatic tour there
will also be a demonstration illustrating how natural areas filter water and a discussion
about the importance of water quality.
Bison Tours
Visitors to the 3000-acre preserve on Bison Day will have the opportunity to see bison in their natural
habitat while riding safely atop a hay trailer towed by a tractor.
Kids’ Activities: face painting, coloring, collage making and scavenger hunts will be ongoing throughout
the day.
