The 42nd Lorain County Regional Scholastic Art Exhibition Each year the Lorain County Regional Scholastic Committee services the junior and senior high schools of Lorain, Huron and Erie counties in preparing, judging and exhibiting the Scholastic Art Award competition. Judging is based on the originality of the piece, the technical skill and the personal vision of the student artist. This is a blind adjudication where the jurors know nothing about the identities of the students whose works they are assessing. An honorable mention allows the piece to be displayed in the gallery. A Silver Key denotes a high quality of achievement in the above mentioned categories. Gold Keys are awarded for works demonstrating the highest levels of achievement and these will be forwarded to New York City for national adjudication. In addition, five Gold Key works are nominated as “Best of Show.” These works are reviewed in a special judging for the American Visions Award. At the 2010 competition, for the first time, teachers were limited to entering fifty pieces per art instructor in each school. Seventy seven percent of the Elyria Catholic High School entries received an award in the exhibition. Of the fifty Gold Keys available to the Lorain Region, Elyria Catholic was awarded six. Of these, a drawing by Emily Mueller, Unfinished Thought, received one of the five American Vision Awards for “Best of Show” and will compete nationally in this category in New York. Emily’s senior portfolio will also go to New York to compete for one of six $10,000 scholarships. In addition, four of her entries earned Silver Keys.
