TYPE OF COURSE:
The course consists of lectures, assignments, examinations, group
discussions, and field problem solving activities.
CREDIT HOURS:
5 (50 lecture hours)
PREREQUISITES:
ENT 211 (Hydraulics) or instructor permission.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Introduction to the fundamental principles of analysis and design
of stormwater conveyance systems.
Emphasis is on the
hydrological cycle, surface water runoff analysis, and the design of
detention systems, conveyance systems, culverts, and stormwater
outlet protection. Formerly CET 166.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to
understand and apply the basic concepts of the following:
 Identify the hydrological cycle and causes
 Calculate stormwater runoff quantities using the Rational and
NRCS methods.
 Explain concepts of time of concentration, Manning's
equation, storm frequencies, and storm intensities
 Calculate pipe and culvert sizes for stormwater conveyance
 Calculate stormwater detention volumes
 Compute runoff hydrographs
 Design stormwater conveyance systems
 Design rip rap protection

Introduction to Hydraulics and Hydrology with Applications for
Stormwater Management, 4th Edition by John E. Gribbin
OTHER MATERIALS:
The following materials are required for this course:

Engineering computation paper, straight edge, engineer scale,
protractor, pencil, and eraser

Scientific Calculator (with trigonometric, radian, and root
function capability at minimum)

Laptop/notebook computers with spreadsheet computation
software (not required – recommended only)

A copy of the instructor’s Engineering Course Guidelines for
the current quarter of instruction. Requirements of this
syllabus take precedence over those guidelines if a conflict
arises.
PORTFOLIOS:
Assignments should be organized in a portfolio as a professional
practice. Recommendations for doing so are provided in
“PORTFOLIO GUIDELINES” that follow.
EVALUATION SUMMARY:
Evaluation of the student’s final grade will be based upon the
following components and their assigned proportion. See “FINAL
GRADE” below for final grade. Additionally, one must complete
the final two assignments and pass the Final Examination in order
to pass the course.
