Students who successfully complete this course will demonstrate: 1- knowledge of the principles of etymology and semantic change as well as the ability to use a historical dictionary. 2- knowledge of general features of Old and Middle English. 3- An understanding of the social contexts and mechanisms of language change. 4- Awareness of several problems in the origin and nature of language.
