Exposition Avenue and Sable Boulevard Travel Impacts
Keep in mind that unforeseen circumstances and changing conditions make the construction process dynamic.




Aurora Mall Entrance to Blackhawk Street will open overnight Oct. 22
West of the Aurora Mall Entrance to Sable Boulevard will close overnight on Oct. 22
Full closure of Exposition Avenue and Sable Boulevard Intersection as soon as Nov. 3 (refer to detour
description and map below)
Follow signage; travel patterns may change daily
Exposition Avenue and Sable Boulevard Intersection Full Closure
Utility relocations and paving operations will require a full closure of the Exposition Avenue and Sable Boulevard
Intersection starting as soon as Oct. 22, lasting through the end of November. This intersection will have to close
again in the future for track installation; notification will be sent out beforehand.
 Nighttime work will be necessary
 Increased truck traffic entering and exiting the work area
 Construction schedule is weather dependent and subject to change
 Follow signage to direct you; do not cut through residential neighborhoods
TRAFFIC IMPACTS
 Southbound Sable Boulevard detoured south on Centerpoint Drive, east on Exposition Avenue, south on
Chambers Road, west on Mississippi Avenue
 Northbound Sable Boulevard detoured east on Mississippi Avenue, north on Chambers Road, west on
Alameda Avenue, south on Abilene Street
 Eastbound Exposition Avenue detoured south on Blackhawk Street, east on Mississippi Avenue, north on
Chambers Road, west on Exposition Avenue
 Westbound Exposition Avenue detoured north on Centerpoint Drive, north on Sable Boulevard, west on
Alameda Avenue, south on Abilene Street
BUSINESS AND RESIDENTIAL IMPACTS
 Business and residential access will be maintained
 General business access signs will be provided

Peoria Light Rail Bridge
Upcoming Construction Activities: Construction is in full force along the Aurora Line/I-225 Rail project. Crews are
constructing the light rail bridge that will cross over Peoria Street/Sand Creek at Fitzsimons Parkway. Construction
activities will include building bridge piers, decking, abutments, walls and guideway east and west of Peoria Street,
and installing girders spanning over Peoria Street. Click here for more information about the bridge construction
process.
Peoria Street Traffic Impacts: For various construction activities, intermittent lane restrictions and nighttime full
closures will be required. Watch for weekly website updates and construction alerts detailing these
restrictions/closures as they approach. To avoid traffic congestion in this area, use I-70 or I-225 as alternate routes.
Keep in mind that:

Possible nighttime work may occur

Activities may cause noise and vibration

Bus routes may be temporarily relocated
Corridorwide Traffic Impacts: Construction will require periodic lane restrictions and detours throughout the 10.5mile project. For your safety, and the safety of our workers, motorists should use extreme caution when driving
through construction zones. Pay attention to message boards and increased truck traffic.
Work Performed by Others: Additional work performed by Aurora Water, Xcel Energy and other construction
companies will also occur throughout the project and be communicated separately by each responsible entity.
Business Impacts: Business access will be maintained at all times, however alternate access may be required to
facilitate construction. Please continue to support local businesses.
Abilene Street Construction:
As part of the Aurora Line/I-225 Rail project, construction activities continue along Abilene Street. Upcoming detours
and lane restrictions will be required for utility work and underground electrical crossing Abilene Street (between
Mississippi and Iliff avenues) for the next several months.
Upcoming Construction Activities:
1. Underground electrical installation across Abilene Street near the Jewell Avenue intersection as soon as Oct. 20
for several weeks
 Lanes will be reduced to one lane in each direction with traffic shifting from northbound to southbound
Abilene Street between Florida and Evans avenues
 Through traffic is encouraged to use Sable Boulevard as an alternate route
2. Utility relocations across Abilene Street near the Florida Avenue intersection to begin late fall, lasting for several
weeks
 Phase I: Northbound travel between Jewell and Mississippi avenues; use Jewell Avenue to Sable Boulevard
as alternate route
 Phase II: Once phase I is complete, traffic reduced to one lane in each direction between Jewell and
Mississippi avenues
3. Utility relocations across Abilene Street near the Florida Avenue intersection to begin early winter, lasting for
several weeks
 Phase I: Northbound travel between Jewell and Mississippi avenues; use Jewell Avenue to Sable Boulevard
as alternate route
 Phase II: Once phase I is complete, traffic reduced to one lane in each direction between Jewell and
Mississippi avenues
Business Impacts:
 Businesses remain open during construction
 Limited business access from southbound Abilene Street
 In some places, northbound business access restricted to right in right out
With all of this activity occurring along Abilene Street, it's important to drive safely through construction

Please remember that businesses remain open during construction although alternate access may be
required.
The following lanes restrictions will be in place next week. Roads will be open unless specified as closed. Lane
restrictions are intermittent and can change by day. Please use caution when traveling in the area:
I-225 Highway Expansion Project (SEMA Construction)

Northbound and southbound I-225 (Parker Road to Mississippi Avenue) right and left lanes
Area A - Iliff Station to Exposition Avenue

Iliff Avenue and I-225 Intersection
o Westbound and eastbound Iliff Avenue (Blackhawk to Abilene streets) right and left lanes

Abilene Street
o Northbound travel closed to through traffic between Jewell and Mississippi avenues; motorists
detoured via Jewell Avenue to Sable Boulevard to Mississippi Avenue for a couple of weeks;
southbound travel remains open
o Additional right and left lanes from Iliff to Exposition avenues

Florida Avenue
o Westbound and eastbound Florida Avenue (Abilene Street to Arkansas Drive) right and left lanes
o Limited access to Abilene Street from Florida Avenue

Mississippi Avenue and I-225 Intersection
o Northbound I-225 on/off-ramps right lanes
Area B - Exposition Avenue to 2nd Avenue and Abilene Street

Exposition Avenue
o Sable Boulevard Intersection full closure starting as soon as Oct. 27 through the end of November;
see detour map for alternate routes
o East of Aurora Mall Entrance to Sable Boulevard closed through the end of November
Area C - 2nd and Abilene Station to 6th Avenue

6th Avenue and I-225 Intersection
o Northbound on/off-ramps right and left lanes

Intersection of Abilene Street and 4th Avenue
o Full closure through late fall
Area E - 13th Avenue to Montview Boulevard

Colfax Avenue and I-225 Intersection
o Westbound and eastbound right lanes

CDOT’s Colfax Over Tollgate Creek Project (I-225 to Potomac Street)
o New traffic switch implemented for seven months; eastbound and westbound head to head traffic
o Southbound I-225 off-ramp to Colfax Avenue limited to two lanes
Area F - Fitzsimons Parkway

Westbound and eastbound Fitzsimons Parkway (17th Avenue to Peoria Street)

Westbound 17th Avenue right lane to Fitzsimons Parkway
Area G - Peoria Street

Northbound and southbound Peoria Street (Fitzsimons Parkway to 30th Avenue) right and left lanes

Aurora Line construction on Exposition Avenue
Construction of the portion of the Aurora Line/I-225 Rail running down the center of Exposition Avenue has begun.
Construction activities will start along the north side of Exposition Avenue (between Abilene Street and Sable
Boulevard). The westbound right lane will be restricted.
Construction activities will be done in phases along Exposition Avenue requiring various lane restrictions through
2015. Bus stops will also be intermittently impacted.
Business access will be maintained at all times; alternate access may be required to facilitate construction.
Colfax Bridge construction overview
The Colfax Avenue Light Rail Bridge is unique from other bridges along the Aurora Line/I-225 Rail because it includes
the light rail station. The future bridge will cross over Colfax Avenue on the west side of I-225 near the Fitzsimons
Parkway intersection. This station will allow access to the VA Medical Center and Children’s Hospital Colorado.
Construction activities include building bridge piers, decking, abutments, walls and guideway north and south of
Colfax Avenue, installing girders spanning over Colfax Avenue, and constructing the station platform and amenities.
Construction activities are weather dependent and subject to change.
Colfax area traffic impacts
Intermittent lane restrictions and nighttime full closures are underway, and will occur through the fall of 2014. Click

Through eastbound/westbound traffic should use Sixth Avenue as an alternate route


the safety of our workers, motorists should use extreme caution when driving through construction
zones. Pay attention to message boards and increased truck traffic.

Additional work performed by Aurora Water, Xcel Energy and other construction companies will also occur throughout
the project and be communicated separately by each responsible entity. CDOT will be replacing two bridge structures
over Toll Gate Creek this summer.

New Updates as of Oct. 10, 2014: East Corridor Commuter Rail
South Half of Moline Between 33rd and Smith Road: Closed as the road is improved; north half of the road is open.
Access roads through the new RTD Station Parking lot provide a by-pass around the construction in Moline.
Beginning Oct. 8, 33rd Avenue will be one way to the east from Nome to Peoria as work on the widening and
improving the north half of 33rd commences. This should take about two months, assuming reasonable weather
conditions; then work on the south half of the road will begin.
Chambers Road at Smith: The Regional Transportation District's contractor for the East Rail Line, Denver Transit
Partners (DTP), previously planned full closure of Chambers Road between Smith Road and 25th Drive scheduled for
this weekend has been postponed until the weekend of Oct. 17, 2014. From 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, 2014, until 5 a.m.
Monday, Oct. 20, 2014, a complete closure of Chambers Road between Smith Road and 25th Drive will occur. All
businesses will remain accessible during construction.
