“Making Recycling Even Simpler” By: Angelo Sciandra & Jeremy Roden Personal Knowledge: On our spring training trip to Florida for baseball Angelo and I came across a different sort of recycling method in the Atlanta Airport. They didn’t feature multiple garbage cans; they featured one garbage can that all waste and recyclable material could go in. As curious people like we are it seemed weird that one of the largest airports did not recycle, but little did we know that indeed they were recycling. They are part of the program started by the Waste Pro Corporation. Waste Pro opened up a facility in which they could collect all garbage together and it would be sorted at their facility so that the recyclable material could be recycled and the remaining waste would be sent to the landfill and wasted landfill space would be eliminated. After coming back up north Angelo and I thought why can’t we do the same thing up north as they do in the south so that it’s more convenient for the people. Brief summary of business: Casella Waste Systems is a company located in the North Eastern part of the country with a couple locations in the south. The most local location is in Dunkirk New York. Casella has adapted to a new plan of zero sort recycling. This features being able to put all your recycled materials in one bin and they will sort the items out for you and recycle them in the right categories with their new sorting system. The problem with this is that waste is in a different garbage can and it causes the clientele to have to sort garbage from recyclables. Government: There are two quotes that President Obama has stated about the changes we need to make to our global environment and economy: “We need to recycle and reuse plastic, paper, glass and aluminum more often” and “Small changes in our daily lives can have a big impact on our environment.” In the little time he has been in the White House, President Obama has increased funding for “Go Green” activities and wants “Green” jobs to increase. Community: This would be such a tremendous program for the people of the community. It would make it so much easier for the people to recycle. Also, landfill space is very minimal and in the near future landfills will be filled up and there will be no place for garbage. We need to save as much landfill space as possible and this would be a huge step in that direction because of the increase in the amount of recycled materials that would be kept from being sent to landfills. Start up plans: Yes Casella Waste Systems makes it easy for their customers to recycle, but why not make it even easier? Why not adapt to a plan like Waste Pro does? Casella is more than half way there now with their zero sort recycling. Why not just take in all garbage and recyclables together and have a sorting system similar to Waste Pro? Positives: -Jobs created -Reduces garbage sent to landfills -50% after 1st year, 70% after 2nd year -Easy to operate Negatives: -New equipment needed for sorting Customer benefits: Not only will it make it easier for people to recycle but it will also attract customers because they will know that they can throw everything into one garbage can and in the end all the material will be sorted and the recyclable material will be recycled and landfill space will be saved. Market: As the president of a company what would be the most ideal situation to manage your company in? How about managing a company with ZERO competition? That is what adapting to the all in one sorting system will result in. No other companies in the north will have this system. This means that it would be very easy to advertise for your company and very easy to bring in both new residence and new businesses for your company. Goals: After adapting to the all in one system Casella would have to accomplish a few goals: -Attract community and campus; as a company with zero competition this would be very easy to attract clientele. You could bring in the community, SUNY Fredonia, and local businesses. -Make it easier for customers; your customers would be at an advantage because they would not have to sort their recyclables from their garbage, thus making it more convenient and less stressful to them because they wouldn’t have to worry about what can be recycled and what cant. -Eliminate competition; by adapting to the new all in one program all competition would be eliminated. -Profit increase by eliminating competition; by eliminating competition you would attract more clientele because the customers always want the easy way and attracting more clientele equals more profit.
