Cuyahoga Heights Elementary School Parent Newsletter April 2015 Principal’s Message Principal We have just come back from Spring Break and everyone is ready to power through the last eight weeks of school in anticipation of summer. This is one of the busiest times of year at CHES, so keep an eye on the calendar and the district website for all of the fun and exciting end-of-year activities and events. Also, please assist us in keeping your children well-rested and focused on school as the weather warms up and spring sports begin. We may be nearing the end of the year, but we still have a lot of work to do! We came back to school and jumped right in to MAP testing for all students. This is the final MAP test of the school year and every student in kindergarten through fifth grade will be assessed in both reading and math. This is the third time that the students have taken the MAP this year and the results will be used to help us determine how much growth they have made over the course of the school year. In addition to MAP testing, we are headed into the second part of statewide testing season. We completed the first part of PARCC/AIR testing, called the Performance Based Assessments (PBA), in February and March, but we are not quite finished yet. The second part of statewide testing is called the End of Year Assessments (EOY). Students in third grade will take the Spring Reading OAA and the PARCC mathematics assessments. Students in fourth grade will take the PARCC language arts and mathematics assessments, as well as the AIR social studies assessment. Students in fifth grade will take the PARCC language arts and mathematics assessments, as well as the AIR science assessment. All of the dates for these Mrs. Joy Houchen Principal assessments are listed on the Calendar of Events in this newsletter. I am sure that you have heard about MAP, PARCC, and AIR from your children already this year. Several of you also attended our districtwide family involvement evening that gave you additional information about the state assessments. If you are confused, concerned, or have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to contact me or your child’s teacher. We will be happy to clear up anything we can for you. Please remember, although these assessments are very important, we do focus on the whole child here at CHES. Your child is not a test score! We encourage every student to do his or her best on the assessments so we can get a true picture of how our school is doing overall, but we know that there are a lot of factors involved in having a wellrounded and educated child. We focus on responsibility, respect, and safety. We want to produce students who experience all aspects of life and schooling. We strive to have fun, involve families, celebrate our accomplishments, and build a community of learners who care about each other. For all of those reasons, we have a lot of other things, aside from assessments, going on at the school. Students are actively engaged in fun and exciting learning activities at school every day. In addition, there are several upcoming field trips, the Redskin Run, Grandparents’ Day, Muffins for Moms, the fifth grade picnic, Pre-K conferences, Field Day, fifth grade graduation, and so much more! Stay informed and involved because it takes teamwork between school and home to make all of this a success. Bathing Suits Attention all stringers and their families! Has your child outgrown their bathing suit? If so, please consider donating it to the pool. Many times bathing suits are loaned to students for class when they forget their bathing suit. Please send suits to the office. Mark your calendars for the second annual STRING EXPLOSION on May 19 at 7:00 p.m. All string students in grades 4-12 will perform in one concert. It will be a wonderful celebration of string music for all of the performers and their families. More information to follow in the May newsletter.
