Message from Jenny: Pancakes & Shamrocks! Half-Term Activities; what have we been up to? The sun has come to play! Volume 1, Issue 3 March 2014 Spring has sprung! I have dug out my sunglasses and officially moved the majority of our play to the outdoor kind. Our evening sessions have just flown by the last couple of weeks with being able to play football, tennis and Hide & Seek in the warm sunshine. If you are venturing into your spider webby sheds for the first time this year, please have a look and see if you have any outdoor toys that your children have outgrown. We are looking for anything suitable for age three upwards from scooters to hula hoops and everything in between. Anything you want to clear out, please give us a shout first. We’re happy to collect bulky items, too. Ofsted No: EY467087 Half Term Rocks! What a week we had! On messy day we had everything from crazy painting (their hands, arms feet were a sight to behold) to igloo building; the children used their super engineering skills to work out how best to build it and stick it together so it didn’t fall over! That was great until someone then jumped on it! A new game was born On Wednesday we held Movie and Sports Day. The children created giant-sized story boards and lots of them went on to film their movies. We had a much needed afternoon in the playground playing lots of sports and finally settled down for a late afternoon movie. Then we went home to dream and scheme for the Easter Holidays! Pancake Day was interesting: 46 pancakes on a camping stove was an experience…one the children loved! I’m not so sure I’ll be repeating it though! Certain parents laughed at our culinary skills…or lack of them. It hurt. It really hurt. Then there was Spy Mission Day! The children worked as special agents who had to follow the clues and collect the keys to free Agent Z. The killer laser room (with real lasers I might add) was a hot favorite, along with invisible writing, creating agent names and collecting footprints and finger prints. It was a huge success and Agent Z was, unsurprisingly, very pleased to be freed from the cleaner’s cupboard! However, not a single scrap of pancake was left so they may have looked a bit dodgy but they tasted mighty fine with a variety of savoury and then sweet fillings. On one of our trips to The Phoenix Recycling Centre in Welingborough (kids’ club dream) we found some massive rolls of paper. The children had so much fun with them! They started by drawing huge pictures, then writing funny notes next they EYFS Update from Abbie :) Stars of the Week Caitlin Hedley Caitlin comes to School Wrap every day and always meets us with a cheerful greeting! She is great at using her independence in play and gets on well with all of the other children. A great role model! Our Second Star is Harry Railton. Harry has a super imagination and is always engrossed in play; he plays well with the other children. Became vehicles to be pulled around on, worn like hats and were cut up to make dressing ups. Now who needs a Wii? World Book Day Term Time Antics We work alongside the 8 Playwork Principles (attached with Newsletter). They are also on the Parents’ Noticeboard at the club. Please have a read so that you fully understand our aims and objectives at School Wrap. This is why, a lot of the time, children direct their own play, rather than have specific activities or rules to follow in a craft or game (although we do a bit of this). They may not come home with a beautiful crafted sculpture every day, but they havewinding down and Book for Easter Now! Summer Holiday spaces available NOW! So, as you can see, we’ve been incredibly busy over the past few weeks! And how do we tie all of this mayhem into the EYFS?! Easy!! Our Spy Day for example met plenty of milestones in the EYFS Development Matters Framework. For example, Personal, Social and Emotional targets were met in the form of ‘Can play in a group, extending and elaborating play ideas’, ‘Enjoys responsibility for carrying out small tasks’ and ‘Can usually adapt behaviour to different events, social situations and changes in routine’. These milestones support and encourage children’s self-esteem and self-confidence, and their ability to manage relationships, their feelings and behaviour. So as you can see, each activity the children participate in, game they play or experience they gain helps them to reach the milestones that get them ready for the rest of their educational lives. Up to this point, I have been Key Person to all our EYFS children which means I am the main point of contact for parents and children, and will complete all necessary paperwork such as planning and adding to their Learning Journey’s. The Children looked fantastic dressed up as their favourite book characters for World Book Day. Some wonderful classics in there including Pinocchio and Fantastic Mr Fox. Shamrock City! We shall be celebrating St Patrick’s Day on 17th March in style! Perhaps no Guninness or hairy bacon on the menu (my dad’s favourite when we were kids…yuk!). However we’ll be finding some novel ways of presenting…, yes, you guessed it, POTATOES! We are also planning some Irish themed crafts and games so watch this space for the craic! Now that Chloe is getting settled and beginning to work through her NVQ in Childcare, we have decided that it would be beneficial for her to take on the responsibility of Key Person for one of the children. We have notified this family, but we hope that you will all support her in completing her course!
