STONESFIELD PRIMARY SCHOOL 14.06.2013 Learning Together to Achieve our Best Dear Parents and Carers We have had a very busy week with lots of exciting school trips. On Tuesday Year 4 have been to Hill End for a partnership schools team building day and today they have been to the Ashmolean Museum. Year 6 enjoyed a fabulous day of role play at the Steam Museum in Swindon, they looked fantastic dressed as evacuees ready for their WWII experience. Early years went on their weekly visit to forest schools. Year 3 are looking forward their residential to Hill End on Monday and year 6 will have their second Induction day at Marlborough school on Thursday next week. Congratulations to Miss James on the arrival of her new babies, 6 beautiful chicks have hatched in the EYFS classroom this week! Art Exhibition Thank you to everyone who came to visit our art gallery this week. Our talented team of TA’s worked for hours finding creative ways to exhibit the children’s art work and we are grateful to them for the wonderful results. The exhibition is testimony to our determination to maintain our creative curriculum whilst at the same time continuing to raise academic standards at our school. Dog Fouling Unfortunately, once again we have had a problem with dogs fouling on our school playing field. If you are a dog owner please be responsible and do not let your dog on the premises. It is very unpleasant and a health hazard for children and adults. Guitar Lessons Although it is exam week for the County Music Service there will be guitar lessons for pupils on Monday 17th June. However there will not be a lesson on Monday 24th June. If any pupils would be interested in starting lessons Mr. Wright has some capacity for new pupils; ideally from year 2 and up. Please let the office know if you are interested. EYFS Forest Schools EYFS have had a lovely time at forest school this morning, making dens, finding fossils and enjoying lots of imaginative play. Thank you to Mrs. Brand-Wiggins for coming along to help. Steam Museum visit On Wednesday year 6 went to the Steam Museum at Swindon. This was part of our topic work on WW2. All the children dressed as evacuees. We took part in role play workshops including what to do when the air raid siren was sounded. We pretended to be evacuated on a train and we had to have rationed lunches. Thank you to Mrs. Appleton and Mrs. Langley for coming along and to Miss Jenkins for organising this exciting trip. Alegria and Skye. Kwik Cricket Last Friday nine children from year 6 took part in a kwik cricket tournament at Combe. We played against three teams, Bletchingdon, William Fletcher and Combe and we won all three. This means that we go through to the district final on 26 th June. Thank you to Mr. Day and Mrs. Barker who came along and helped with transport. Thank you to Miss Jenkins for organizing this event. Bertie and Will. FoSS News The Village Fete is fast approaching. Please don't forget the non-uniform day on Friday 28th June in exchange for a 'Jolly Jar' that can then be raffled on the Jolly Jar stall to raise money for our school. Anyone who isn't on the FoSS committee but might be able to help with a stall for half an hour on the day of the fete could contact me on 891712. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks Neil Rust Footsteps with Year 6 & EYFS We had an excellent morning of Footsteps tutoring, hosted by Year 6, working with the EYFS children, on Thursday. Working on a 1 : 1 ratio, outside in the front playground area (a few Year 6 children worked in pairs, with one EYFS child), they helped the younger children to understand pedestrian listening skills (‘near and far’) and practiced stopping exercises (‘fast and slow’), helping the younger children to understand that it is better to walk than run when out and about near vehicles. The sessions gave a reminder to both age groups how to be safer pedestrians, as the oldest children in the school prepare to travel 1 independently to and from their new schools in September. Following the sessions, each EYFS child was rewarded with sticker/stickers by their Y6 tutor. I hope to put up a display of Thursday’s session in the school entrance lobby in the next couple of weeks. There will be an assembly to mark another year of Footsteps tutoring within the school, with certificates for Year 2 children and something for the Year 6 children to use to help them be noticed on their darker, winter journeys home. Thank you again to all children and teachers for your continued enthusiasm and support for the programme. Jane O’Gorman, Footsteps Tutor Community News Play area plans We will have the plans from 3 separate companies on display for you all to see. I think they should be entered into a new show category 'my favourite virtual place in Stonesfield!!!!'. Come along and give us your views, or just have a nose at these beautiful draft plans. We look forward to show casing these exiting ideas. I have included a piece in the next 'Slate', informing the wider community, but in the meantime, could I ask anyone who is involved in another group organisation, such as Pre-school, Toddlers, Tennis Club, Cricket Club, Youth Club, Cubs/Beavers etc etc, to pass this information on. Many Thanks, Rachel Brand and the gang! See you there! Produce and Cake Stall Many thanks indeed to all who provided and purchased items at the Cake and Produce Stall to date. Thanks to the wealth of high quality fresh produce that has been donated we have now raised over £180.00 for Pre-school and After School Club funds! This will go towards improvements in the Art Area. We will hold two more stalls this summer –, 1st and 15th July from 8.40am on the grass verge outside school (near the St James Centre). If you have items to contribute to our next stall but are unable to drop off that morning, please call Tanya Simpson (Mum of Clara, EYFS) on 891903. Many thanks. White Horse Folk Diary date for July: 10 July - guest artists are the duo Huffenpuff, which is Jo Hamilton and Rupert Alison on saxophone/flute/English bagpipes and accordion.
