Relevant Modules
 Economic Geology – This module looked at the various economic aspects of
geology, such as formation and placer deposits as well as the impacts
associated with mining.
 Mineral Exploration – This module followed Economic Geology and focussed
more on the techniques of mineral exploration and extraction. I was taught
how to look for gravity and thermal anomalies in order to identify mineral
placer deposits. I also learnt how to prospect for a mineral and the steps I
would need to take in order to find then exploit it.
 Petroleum Geoscience – This module looked at the processes surrounding
petroleum production and exploration. It involved studying a time frame of the
North Sea Basin and the geological setting of the deposits found in the time
period. I had to look at the traps in detail, finding; the source rocks, migration
pathways, the reservoir rock and the cap rocks, which constituted the
petroleum play from the given time period. The unit also looked at the oil and
gas formation as well as production and exploration.
