June 2015 Spotlight on 4-H Newsletter Supplement Amazing Photography Opportunity If you enjoy taking or just looking at amazing photographs you won’t want to miss this chance not only to see these images, but to meet the local photographer that takes them and learn the stories behind the photos. Eric Anderson originally of Lyons is well on his way to becoming a nationally renowned photographer. He is based in Omaha and is a 23 year-old severe weather, landscape, astro and time lapse photographer. Eric grew up on a farm near Lyons and has a love for the outdoors. He works as the technical director for Omaha based production company, Dundee Digital and he’s agreed to come back to Burt County to share his photos and story with the community at large. Photography is a life-long hobby for many, and for those just starting out this could be a life enriching opportunity to see opportunities beyond the lens as Eric shares his photos. Eric Anderson will be at the Bill Larson Building on the Burt County Fairgrounds in Oakland on Tuesday evening, June 30. The program will begin at 7:00 p.m. and it is open to the public and especially to area 4-H members and other photography enthusiasts. If you’d like to see a preview of Eric’s talent go on-line to his website at: http://cloudedlens.com/. Please join us to celebrate Eric’s talent and to increase your own skills during a question and answer session after his presentation. CASNR Career Exploration Tour ($12.50) – July 29th Sewing Machine Available Deb Hansen’s Mother donated a Singer Sewing Machine to the Extension Office for 4-Her’s and their families to check out and use to complete their projects. This will be great if you do not have a sewing machine or yours decides that it is not going to work to finish up your projects. It will be useful for families that have multiple children sewing so that two can sew at the same time without the hassle of changing thread for each project. Deb Schroeder has not had time to sew with or check it out. If there is a specific time that your family would like to check it out please call the Extension Office to schedule when you plan to use it. 2015 4-H Country Kitchen Work Schedule All 4-H members ages 14 and older will be required work one shift in the 4-H Country Kitchen (same as in the past and since the food stand began in 1966). Your members have until July 1 to sign up for the shift they prefer to work. There will be varying numbers of workers based on the work load in the kitchen. Once the slots for a work shift are full of volunteers no other 4-Hers may sign up for that shift. Please encourage 4-Hers in your club to call and sign up for the shift that will work best for them. After July 1 those who have not signed up will be assigned a time to work in the 4-H Country Kitchen. If the shift that they sign up for or are assigned does not work for them the 4-Her is responsible for recruiting someone (parent or 4-H member ages 12 and 13 to fill their shift). If you or your 4-H members have any questions about this responsibility please contact the 4-H Council Country Kitchen Committee members: Kara Sweeney, Terry Buderus, Sophie Glaubius and Kendra Paasch. 4-H Country Kitchen Club Work Schedule Enclosed (bright lime green) you will find the times that clubs and independent families are responsible for providing two adults to work in the 4-H Country Kitchen during the 2015 Cuming County Fair. Youth in your club are encouraged to sign up for the same time as your club is assigned to save on trips to the fairgrounds. We are sending this schedule out earlier to make it easier for people to see the times, so they can plan and volunteer to work the assigned time. Exhibitor Numbers This year exhibitor numbers will not be required on entry cards for all static exhibits. Exhibitor numbers are not required in the new enrollment system nor the program used to figure fair premiums. Entry tags still have lines for exhibitor numbers. Please tell your club members to just draw a line through that part of the entry tag. Livestock exhibitors will have exhibitor numbers and they will be sent out in the July 4-H newsletter. Supplies Available If you have made a pillow for exhibit this year and still need to purchase a pillow form we have a 16” square pillow forms available for $5.89 which includes tax. Clarification on Upcycled (Recycled) Garments All members enrolled in clothing projects may exhibit in the “Upcycled Classes”. It was previously announced that members had to enroll in Decorate Your Duds to exhibit in the classes. Details of the classes are: Class C221004. Upcycled Garment. 4-H members enrolled in a Clothing project may enter an article of clothing made from a used item. The original used item must be altered (not just decorated) in some way to create a new wearable piece of clothing. A before picture and a description of the redesign process must accompany the entry or it will be disqualified. C221005. Upcycled Clothing Accessory. 4-H members enrolled in a Clothing project may enter an Upcycled Clothing Accessory exhibit. A wearable accessory made from a used item. The item used must be changed in some way in the “redesign” process. A before picture and a description of the redesign process must accompany the entry or it will be disqualified. Home Environment: Exhibit Guidelines 1) Items must be designed to be used for home decorating, home furnishing or home management (no clothing, purses, note cards, scrapbooks/photo albums, etc.) 2) Accessories should be of high quality (as compared to quick, simple crafts), suitable for use in the home several months throughout the year. 3) Items should show creativity and originality, along with the application of design principles and elements. Ask yourself: How have I shown creativity and applied the design principles and elements in this accessory? Youth are required to include this information. 4) Entered in correct class: What medium is the majority of your accessory made from? What was changed or manipulated? 5 5) Items should be ready for display in the home: pictures framed, wall hangings and pictures ready to hang etc. No single mat board or artist canvas panels. Wrapped canvas (if staples not visible on edge) is accepted without framing, but still needs to include hanger. Make sure hangers are strong enough to support the item. 6) New this year: Supporting information is required for all Home Environment exhibits. Attach information explaining steps taken to make your exhibit. Information must also include element or principle of design used in creating your exhibits. Elements of Design – line, shape, direction, size, texture, color, and value. Principles of Design – balance, gradation, repetition, contrast, harmony, dominance and unity. See the enclosure or the Design Decisions 4-H manual for a better understanding of the Elements of Design and Principles of Design to help with developing supporting information for your exhibits. Quilt Quest: Exhibit Guidelines 4-Hers learn skills as they progress through the project. Another person can do the quilting for them. In the Premier class, the 4-Her has developed skills to be able to do all of the work by himself/herself. This includes pattern and fabric selection, cutting and sewing individual pieces, layering the quilt top/batting/backing together, and quilting. Quilting may be done by hand, by sewing machine or by a commercial-grade quilting machine. After quilting, the 4-Her must finish the quilt by "squaring it up," put binding on the edge. Placing a label on the quilt back which includes at least the name of the person making the quilt and year for historical purposes. On a half sheet of 8 ½ x 11 inch paper, include an explanation answering the following questions: A) How did you select the design and fabrics including whether or not you used a kit, jelly roll, charm squares, etc.? B) What did you do and what was done by others? C) What did you learn you can use on your next project? Quilts of Valor Nebraska 4-H will be accepting Quilts of Valor at the 2015 Nebraska State Fair. Quilts that received purple ribbons at the county fair can be entered and judged in the Quilt Quest, Home Environment and Citizenship project areas. All other Quilts of Valor that will not be judged can be dropped off at the Quilt Quest area. We plan on displaying all Quilts of Valor at the fair and have the “Quilts of Valor Presentation” on Saturday, September 5th beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the 4-H Building. 4-Hers and volunteers who have made and donated quilts will be recognized as their quilt is shown on stage….please encourage 4-H youth to attend.
