Job Title: Senior Manager Epidemiologist – Life Cycle Products – Worldwide focus - GSK Vaccines
JOB PURPOSE AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Epidemiology department in GSK Vaccines supports a wide range of areas, from Market
Assessment to Clinical Development and Safety and Effectiveness Evaluation. The support spans
across the whole spectrum of vaccine development, from early vaccine discovery to registration, postmarketing studies, and lifecycle management.
The current role is about supporting the teams working on seasonal influenza and vaccines. However,
the Senior Manager Epidemiologist may need to support also work on other vaccines and infectious
diseases according to the business needs. The job base will be in Wavre, Belgium, with projects and
studies to be implemented worldwide. Responsibilities include:
 Contribute significantly to the development of a worldwide epidemiological strategy and
research plan within the Life Cycle Product portfolio, including also vaccines against seasonal
influenza.
 Provide epidemiology expertise for disease understanding relevant to vaccine development
and lifecycle management: incidence, prevalence, risk factors, natural history course,
treatment and prevention patterns, co-morbidities, outcome measures, unmet needs, and
their variations across domains such as demographics and geographies.
 Support safety evaluation of vaccines and development of risk management plans: provide
background event rates, synthesize existing evidence including through meta-analyses, identify
high-risk populations, and conduct analytical epidemiological safety studies, as well as postmarketing surveillance studies, and post-authorization studies of vaccine benefit and risk.
 Contribute to the generation of evidence of vaccine value.
 Maintain and expand a worldwide epidemiology support strategy and research program in the
Infectious disease area.
 Develop strong partnerships with the different internal stakeholders in clinical, safety,
regulatory, health outcome, commercial, market access teams, and regional epidemiology
teams.
 Plan resource allocation to accomplish research programs and negotiate internal funding of
projects.
 Develop and negotiate research plans with external collaborators in academia, public health
institutes, supranational organizations or contract research organizations.
 Identify innovative, timely and cost effective methods to conduct epidemiologic studies.
 Oversee and approve epidemiologic and statistical methodologies.
 Conduct and report studies using healthcare databases available within and outside GSK.
 Author epidemiology sections of a variety of submission documents, such as Risk Management
Plans and others.
 Present the company position on epidemiology issues and epidemiology findings to regulatory
agencies, public health organizations and other external authorities.
 Extend a track record of external publications in peer reviewed journals.
 Further strengthen the position as a recognized leader in pharmaco-epidemiology and the
epidemiology of Infectious Diseases.
SPECIALISED KNOWLEDGE:

Educational background requirements:

PhD/Doctorate or MD with MPH in Epidemiology or Advanced Training in Field Epidemiology (e.g.,
EPIET/ECDC or EIS/CDC/USA) (preferred). Minimum requirement: Masters degree in Epidemiology
and proven multi-year experience conducting epidemiologic research.
Minimum 3 years of work experience in the industry, academia, or public health agencies .
Expertise in the epidemiology of Infectious Diseases.
Previous demonstrable experience leading pharmaco-epidemiologic research programs.
Expertise in writing protocols, interpreting data, and presenting at scientific congresses and
writing scientific papers.
Good understanding of the regulatory environment and regulations for post authorization safety
studies and impact/effectiveness studies in Europe and USA and elsewhere.






Excellent oral and written communication skills to interact effectively in multi-disciplinary matrix
teams and to influence decisions.
Fluency in English (Written/spoken/reading) is required. Other languages are an asset.
