Course Description: This course is designed to assist students with developing skills needed to be
successful leaders and responsible members of society. The students will develop personal
attributes and social skills necessary for a successful transition into the world of work, and/or
further education. Emphasis will be placed on team work, problem solving, critical thinking,
communication, (oral and written), personal development (work ethics), and leadership. It is
recommended that the student be a member of HOSA where they will have opportunities to apply
the knowledge gained from this course.

responsibility to obtain information and assignments missed if absent.

HOSA Membership Fees: $5.00 State/$10.00 National - The fee total may be offset by
fundraising events and/or scholarships available.
Course Outline
I.
HOSA Organization
a. Define goals
b. Discuss the benefits of being in the HOSA organization
c. Define and practice officer responsibilities and duties
d. Develop and implement a Program of Work
e. Participate in HOSA events, fund-raisers and local/regional and state competitions
f. Competitive Events (see HOSA Handbook Section B)
g. Participate in community service events
h. Educational Presentations
II.
Study Skills
a. Taking Notes
b. Time Management
c. Explore strategies for test-taking
III.
Leadership Skills
a. Define the characteristics of an effective leader
b. Participate in HOSA activities that require leadership abilities
c. Conduct/Participate in HOSA meetings according to parliamentary procedure
d. Contribute to the Outstanding HOSA chapter scrapbook, HOSA website, media,
newsletters, etc.
e. Prepare/Revise resumes
f. Participate in mock job interviews
