Description of Dance Styles
First Steps
Leader: Katrina Caldwell
First Steps is a fun and stimulating dance class suitable from 16-24 months, providing a
bridge between child and caregiver. We will work with delightful stories, songs and props to
help build your child’s confidence and co-ordination. This is a wonderfully creative class to
prepare your child for Micro Movers.
Micro movers
Leader: Katrina Caldwell
Micro Movers is a fun and exciting dance class for 2-4 year olds. It is a sensory class using a
variety of props, music and storytelling. The class also aims to enhance the early year’s
curriculum exploring shape, number and colour. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Creative Movement
mini movers , movers and shakers, young performers
Leader: Gail Sneddon
These classes are designed to encourage creativity, independent thinking and nurture
individual expression in the children's own movement. By exploring movement through fun
and playful movement activities we can help youngsters to build confidence, with benefits to
academic, social, emotional and physical functioning. Creative Dance Classes will draw on
your child’s natural abilities, encouraging their potential, inventiveness and physical
confidence as their movement vocabulary develops.
Street Dance
Leader: Ruth Mills
Street Dance covers a variety of dance techniques each week from Popping, Locking,
House, Hip Hop, the basics of Breakin’ and Waacking. We will cover the foundations of each
style and then progress to more advanced movement. There will be a chance to learn
personalised choreography in either a style or movement influenced by Street Dance Styles.
Contemporary Dance Technique
Leader: Ruth Mills
These lively and engaging classes are influenced by the Martha Graham technique to
increase creativity, fitness and confidence. The classes focus on alignment and a clear use
of weight and musicality to encourage freedom of movement. These classes are physical,
energetically challenging and most importantly….. fun!!
Ballet
Leader: Angela McArthur
From beginner to advanced classes, students will be formally trained whilst being taught the
value of technique and inspired to refine the skills necessary to grow as dancers. Ballet
improves strength, flexibility and balance while increasing the student’s focus. It is also a
great foundation for all other techniques. Students will follow the internationally recognised
Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) portfolio of examinations.
Jazz
Leader: Joan Beattie
Jazz dance has evolved over the past few years and now includes a vast range of styles.
Today’s jazz may include elements of Street-Jazz, Broadway, Jazz Funk and even
Contemporary movements. Jazz tends to be a faster paced dance form performed to
popular music, new and old. It is a great way to help your co-ordination and build your
cardiovascular levels in an energetic and performance filled setting.
