Home Economics Coursework task Gladys Lee (16), Tanya Chee (24), Teow Kang Hui (25), Yeo Yihui (26) Class: 113 Investigation Information on YOG: YOG logo Youth Olympic Games (YOG) is like any other Olympics but it is specially catered for youths aged 14-18 years old. Young athletes will participate in high-level competitions together with the sports element of the event. The Youth Olympic Games aim to bring together talented these athletes from around the world and non-athlete participants such as young ambassadors and young reporters. They will participate in a Culture and Education Programme (CEP) focused on five themes: Olympism and Olympic values, skills development, well-being and healthy lifestyle, social responsibility and expression through digital media. YOG Mascot Non-athletes (young ambassadors, young reporters etc.) will also participate with young athletes in the CEP activities. The first ever Summer Youth Olympic Games will bring together about 3,600 athletes and 1450 officials in 2010 and the first Winter Youth Olympic Games will bring together around 1,000 athletes and 500 officials in 2012. Information on Youth Athletes: Aside from training, the athletes’ diet is critical so as to obtain an adequate amount of nutrition which can aid in improving their constitution and their sports performance, enabling them to reach their highest potential. There are different types of nutrition in foods such as carbohydrates, proteins, calories, vitamins, minerals, fats. These have various types of functions for the body such as providing energy for the athletes and repairing muscle tissue so as to improve overall health for better sports performance. The importance of what foods are eaten is matched only by when they're eaten. Proper nutrition is important not just on the day of competition, but on a daily basis. Eating a meal or snack an hour or so before athletic activity will provide energy without having a full stomach. It is also important to replenish the body's stores after athletic activity. A meal or snack within one hour of activity will assure this. Carbohydrates should be the main focus, along with protein in smaller amounts. Information on design and produce: In the YOG, the lion is of greatest importance and significance, both to this humongous event and Singapore’s heritage. One of the mascots of the 2010 Youth Olympic Games held in Singapore is Lyo, a featured orange-maned lion cub who loves fun and aspires to encourage youths to keep fit and enjoy sports, which not many of us do in this modern age. The lion is a national symbol of Singapore, our country, due to an old legend about a prince who saw a lion upon disembarkation to the island, and subsequently named the island “Singapura” which means “lion city”. To represent the country, Lyo’s pawprint is a shape reminiscent of Singapore, and his mane mimics the shape of the Flame of Passion of the Spirit of Youth, yet another symbol of the YOG 2010. Thus, we will be designing the sandwich based on a lion design. The whole meal bread will be decorated with salmon and other ingredients into a shape reminiscent of a lion to represent the neverdying spirit of Singapore, to strive for success and to instill in the athletes an urge to reach for the stars and a sense of belonging to the nation. Not only will the sandwich be edible and beneficial to athletes’ various needs for nutrition, it will also bolster their confidence to strive for success for Singapore. Information on eating healthily: Maintaining a healthy diet is very important as food provides energy for our body to work. When you pay attention to what you eat, your body runs at its best. With a healthy diet, you can also be less prone to health related diseases that put your life at risk. Such examples are obesity, high blood pressure and osteoporosis. Healthy Eating The food pyramid helps us to maintain a healthy and well-balanced diet forour eating. Looking at the pyramid (refer to image), it is encouraged to eat more from the ‘grains’ category (bottom of pyramid) at the recommended serving amount, and sparingly of the ‘others’ category (top level of pyramid). By cutting down on food that contain high amounts of fat, the risk of suffering from cancer, stroke, high blood pressure, and obesity is greatly reduced. Looking at the second from the top of the pyramid, dairy products are sources of calcium that helps make our bones strong. However dairy products may also be high in fat. Hence we should reduce our dairy product intake or eat products which are made of low-fat or skim milk. Meat is a good source of protein, but can also be high in fat. Therefore lowering the fat intake by removing skin and eating lean meat will greatly benefit the diet. Eating the appropriate servings of fruits and vegetables will ensure a high fiber diet. This helps greatly in lowering the cholesterol level of our body and also prevents constipation and intestinal problems. Energy Balance To have a balance in energy, one must have an equal energy input and output. After eating the appropriate serving amounts of food, exercising is also required for the energy balance. Exercising helps us to loose weight and burn off the calories from the food we eat. It builds up our body to be more strong, healthy and less prone to diseases. It is healthy and the price of the ingredients altogether is moderate and affordable. Moreover, the time taken to make the sandwich is not as long as the other two types of sandwiches.
