STUDY SKILLS Programme of Study – Key Stage 3 – GEOGRAPHY Summary The Key Stage 3 Geography course aims to equip learners with the transferable skills need to study Geography at a higher level as well as in the wider world. The curriculum is dynamic and relevant with new topics which explore current affairs and events globally, whilst developing key map skills, presentation, numeracy and literacy. Throughout Key Stage 3 there is an exciting program of field studies. Year 7 Students will study the following: Learning to learn – Development of key skills to aid learning, Students will consider learning styles and address issues of community cohesion and relationships; Where in the world – place specific geography designed to widen students awareness of place and space; Map skills – this unit focuses on the development and application of map skills across a variety of different scales; Location, location – students will examine the theory behind the development of different settlements and compare countries around the world; Geographical skills – this is student’s first chance to develop fieldwork techniques and report writing as part of a practical Geography unit; Spotlight on sport – this unit uses current sporting affairs to highlight the benefits and drawbacks of global supporting events on a variety of scales. Year 8 Going global – this unit examines the globalization and the extent to which this is changing our the world and its connectivity; Where I live – this unit further explores the concept of globalization but is focused on our local community and the influences of changing patterns across the world; Seven billion & counting – in this unit students will explore ideas of overpopulation and the impacts a continually growing society will have on world resources; Crowded costs – through this unit students will consider the implications of changing sea levels and the different human and physical pressures on the coast; Children around the world – this unit is part of the brilliant club initiative to bring current research in issues globally into the classroom. Through this unit students explore what it means to be a child and how this differs around the world; Page | 1 Spotlight on sport – this unit uses current sporting affairs to highlight the benefits and drawbacks of global supporting events on a variety of scales. Year 9 Changing world – this unit looks at climate change and the impact that this is having on our society and the environment. The focus is on future events and what should be done now; Does aid help? – This is the examination of charity and aid around the world, considering who receives it and the implications aid has on those communities. The students will develop greater social awareness of cultures and needs globally; Hazardous world – this unit studies the cause, impact and management of natural hazards globally; Life on the edge – this unit provides a look at survival in some of the most extreme environments on earth. Helping students to understand the ways people and nature adapt to cope; Future flood – this unit is a look at the issues of flooding. It considers the cause and impact of flooding events and what can be done in the future; Spotlight on sport – this unit uses current sporting affairs to highlight the benefits and drawbacks of global supporting events on a variety of scales.
