Fortnightly Column M: 0419 106 461 F: 03 5494 3491 Loddon Mallee Waste and Resource Recovery Group 29/9/2014 Public Place Recycling Everyone has a recycling bin at home but a growing concern amongst Victorians has been a lack of recycling facilities in the public areas such as town centres and sports grounds. How are we to be expected to be good and recycle at home when we have to throw things like plastic bottles in the general waste bin when we’re down the street? Luckily most of the Councils in the Loddon Mallee region either already have or are planning to install Public Place Recycling bins (or PPR) in high traffic areas in the coming months. It’s good to know that the plastic bottle of water you buy to quench that summer thirst will be sent to be made into new bottles rather than filling up our landfills. Gannawarra, Swan Hill, Wakool, Loddon, Buloke and Mildura Councils have all installed public recycling bins in the past few years with great success. With Bendigo planning to install their first city centre bins in October and Mildura expanding their facilities to the Mallee Track in November there are fewer and fewer excuses to throw recyclable items into the general waste bin. You can’t necessarily put the same items in the Public Place Recycling bins as you would in your recycling bins at home. Some only take plastic bottles whereas others will take everything except paper. It’s important that you look at the bin labels before you dispose of your items to avoid contaminating the bin and resulting in everything having to go to the landfill anyway. Some smaller towns and council areas have not yet installed Public Place Recycling. If you live in one of these areas try to take recyclable items home with you, rather than throwing it in a general waste bin, that way you can put them in the recycling bin when you get home.
