RISE@WIU College of Arts and Sciences RISE@PHYSICS: SUMMER RESEARCH EXPERIENCE FOR UNDERGRADUATES (REU) PROGRAM Frank Rodeffer Summer Research Experience Description & Criteria RISE@PHYSICS offers the 2015 Frank Rodeffer Summer Research Experience. This REU will be awarded to an undergraduate student to conduct research with a faculty mentor in the WIU Physics Department during summer 2015. The student will receive a $3000 summer scholarship. Scholarship applicant requirements: Enrollment in the RISE (Research Inspiring Student Excellence) program. (Contact Dr. Araya or Dr. Boley if you questions about how to be part of RISE). Declared major in Physics (including Engineering Physics, Pre-Engineering, and Teacher Education). Cumulative and major GPA of 3.25 minimum (applicants with lower GPA may be considered). Student must register for at least 1 credit hour of PHYS 477(G) during the summer (8 weeks) session. Career aspirations for graduate or professional school. Final report: by the end of the summer, the student must submit a summary of accomplishments to the faculty mentor and RISE@Physics coordinator (500 words maximum). Deliverable(s) of the project and expected date of deliverable(s): The award committee will carefully evaluate whether the deliverables and expected dates are feasible given the goals, current status of the project and proposed work. 3. 4. 5. 6. Examples of deliverables include: publication, presentation at national, regional or local meeting, and research/grant proposal. A draft of a paper in preparation may be included if available. Short statement of career goals and an explanation of how this award will be important to fulfilling those goals. Terms: $3000 will be awarded in the summer to support living expenses. The scholarship will be for an 8-week long research experience (minimum 20 hrs a week) with a start date of June 1st. At the end of the research experience, the student must present a short seminar and complete a report with the main results and conclusions. Student must submit a picture (conducting research or presenting at a meeting) that will be used for news releases, etc. Pictures should be sent to the RISE@Physics coordinator. Funding from the RISE@Physics Frank Rodeffer Summer Research Experience must be acknowledged on all posters, oral presentations, publications and other products of the research. The official RISE@Physics logo must be used in presentations and posters. All accomplishments must be communicated to the RISE@Physics coordinator. Selection Process: Recipient will be selected by the RISE@Physics Committee of the Physics Department. Deadline for Application: March 25th at 12pm.
