GW INTERNAL MEDICINE PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS In addition to fulfilling clinical assignments, the following requirements ensure that you receive a full and well-rounded training experience. Residents who fail to meet the requirements may receive a poor administrative evaluation from the program coordinator and/or a letter of deficiency from the program director. You will be given an E-value account on arrival; this is used to document evaluations, procedures, and other program information. 1. GME Credentialing and Paperwork Before the beginning of every year (PGY1,2,3) You must complete all GME credentialing requirements in a timely fashion. These include the yearly DC training license application, Virginia license application, yearly contract, yearly Physical Exam, Vaccinations/annual PPD, and others!. 2. Duty Hours It is important to not only log duty hours on E-value (only required in month of September but good to do periodically for monitoring) but that you try hard not to commit duty hours violations! PGY-1 residents: no more than 16 continuous hours, with at least 8 hours off between shifts PGY-2/3 residents: no more than 24 hours of continuous call, plus 4 hours for transition of patient care (24+4), and at least 8 hours off between shifts 3. Mini-CEXs Four times per year every year (PGY1,2,3) – logged on E-value. This stands for “mini clinical exam,” but is essentially any attending-observed patient encounter (both inpatient and outpatient experiences). It may include history taking, portion of a physical exam, discussing results, delivering bad news, or providing patient education or counseling. When in doubt, ask your attending if it can count as a mini-CEX and send them the form in Evalue as soon as possible! If you delay too long, your attending may refuse to fill the form out later as he/she may no longer recall the encounter in sufficient detail. 4. Hopkins Modules: http://www.hopkinsilc.org 10 per year every year (PGY1,2,3) You are expected to complete at least 5 modules every 6 months. Last updated 5/29/14 To sign up, go to the website above and select ‘Internal Medicine Ambulatory Care Curriculum.” After selecting George Washington University, enter the passcode: 200 5. Must be submitted to either - the George Washington University Research Day, OR a regional or national conference (American College of Physicians, Society of General Internal Medicine, etc), OR a peer-reviewed publication. Please also notify us if anything you submit is accepted! 6. USMLE Step 3 Exam By January 31 of your PGY2 year (GME requirement!) You must take the exam during elective, SSA, or vacation time when you are NOT on disaster and you do NOT have a clinic day. This is a two-day test. Please email the chief residents with your test dates as soon as they are confirmed. 7. Procedures Log all procedures on E-value Procedures are not required to graduate from the residency program. However, you cannot become certified as competent at a procedure unless you have had the following numbers of procedures observed. For those residents planning to enter hospital based practice, to moonlight, or to perform some fellowships, they often require documentation of certified procedural work to complete credentialing. We cannot and will not attest to your procedural competency if you have not had the following numbers of procedures observed and evaluated. o o o o o o Abdominal Paracentesis (3) Thoracentesis (5) Central Line (5) Lumbar Puncture (5) Pap smears (5) Some also ask for NG tube placement, arterial lines/ABGs, or others. See E-value for full list of procedures you can log. Last updated 5/29/14 8. ACLS certification ACLS renewal (BEFORE THE CARD EXPIRES!) - You must register for training through the GW ER Department by calling and letting them know you are an Internal Medicine resident. This ensures that the hospital will pay for it. If you register online, if you fail to tell them you are a resident at the time of booking, or if you take a training course elsewhere, you will not be reimbursed! 9. Residents as Young Educators (RAYES) Curriculum Curriculum includes an online required reading list to be completed throughout intern year, attendance at didactic sessions on teaching during ambulatory/elective weeks, and performing and receiving feedback on required presentations. Each PGY1 resident must read all articles on the posted RAYES curriculum reading list by the end of PGY1 year. In PGY2 and 3 year each resident will be assigned to lead various conferences by the chief residents. 10. Semi-annual meetings Two per year every year (PGY1,2,3) Every resident is required to meet with his/her CCC faculty member semiannually for a private meeting.
