Awards Information Founded in 1933, the Georgia Southern University Alumni Association serves the University by establishing lifelong relationships with alumni and friends which results in alumni participating in and contributing to the continued growth of the University. The first Alumni Association Awards Ceremony was held in 1969. The Alumni Association Alumnus/Alumna of the Year, the highest award given by the Alumni Association, is given biennially to an alumnus/na who has rendered great service to Georgia Southern University. In addition, an Alumnus/Alumna of the Year award is presented by each College and the Department of Biology. Additional awards considered for presentation include: The Alumnus/na of the year in Private Enterprise The Eagle Lifetime Achievement Award The Friend of Georgia Southern Award Georgia Southern University Alumnus/Alumna of the Year Award This is the highest award given by the Alumni Association. It is given to an alumnus/na who has rendered great service to Georgia Southern University. 1. A candidate must be nominated in writing by someone other than a member of the candidate’s family or the selection committee. 2. A candidate must be a graduate of Georgia Southern University (or its earlier equivalent) and is eligible for consideration no earlier than ten years after their graduation date. 3. Be actively involved in his or her community. (Local Chamber of Commerce, charitable organizations, etc.) 4. Demonstrate a true love for Georgia Southern by enthusiastically supporting the University’s events through projects and personal involvement. 5. The candidate must have a record of service to Georgia Southern University. Examples of possible areas of service could be: A. Service on a board or council dedicated to the progress of Georgia Southern University. B. Helping with alumni functions or related activities such as Alumni Networks, Eagle Clubs and Admissions Receptions. C. Participating in activities intended to make known or promote the services offered by Georgia Southern University through contributions of time and/or donations. Georgia Southern University Alumnus/Alumna of the Year in Private Enterprise Award This award is given by the Alumni Association to an alumnus/na who has excelled professionally and has a record of service to Georgia Southern University. This award is not necessarily presented each year. 1. A candidate must be nominated in writing by someone other than a member of the candidate’s family or the selection committee. 2. A candidate must be a graduate of Georgia Southern University (or its earlier equivalent) and is eligible for consideration no earlier than ten years after their graduation date. 3. The nominee must have excelled professionally and owns his or her own successful business or work for a successful private organization. 4. Be actively involved in his or her community. (Local Chamber of Commerce, charitable organizations, etc.) 5. Demonstrate a true love for Georgia Southern by enthusiastically supporting the University’s events through projects and personal involvement. 6. The candidate must have a record of service to Georgia Southern University. Examples of possible areas of service could be: A. Georgia Southern University Eagle Lifetime Achievement Award This award is given to recognize a Georgia Southern alumnus/na who has made significant contributions to Georgia Southern Athletics. This award has been presented to a few selected people and is not necessarily presented each year. 1. A candidate must be nominated in writing by someone other than a member of the candidate’s family or the selection committee. 2. The candidate can be a graduate or friend of the University. If he/she is a graduate, they are eligible for consideration no earlier than ten years after their graduation date. 3. Be actively involved in his or her community. (Local Chamber of Commerce, charitable organizations, etc.) 4. A candidate must have made significant contributions to Georgia Southern University Athletics. 5. Demonstrate a true love for Georgia Southern by enthusiastically supporting the University’s events through projects and personal involvement. 6. The candidate must have a record of service to Georgia Southern University. Examples of possible areas of service could be: A. Service on a board or council dedicated to the progress of Georgia Southern University. B. Georgia Southern University Friend of Georgia Southern Award This award is given to recognize the outstanding contributions of an individual who has shown dedication and service to the university and/or the Alumni Association through volunteerism. The individual must not be a graduate of the University. This award is not necessarily presented each year. 1. A candidate must be nominated in writing by someone other than a member of the candidate’s family or the selection committee. 2. The candidate must not be a graduate of Georgia Southern University or one of its predecessor institutions. 3. Be actively involved in his or her community. (Local Chamber of Commerce, charitable organizations, etc.) 4. Demonstrate a true love for Georgia Southern by enthusiastically supporting the University’s events through projects and personal involvement. 5. The candidate must have a record of service to Georgia Southern University. Examples of possible areas of service could be: A.
