Clinical Placement - Record of Clinical Competency
This record of Clinical Competency supplements the Clinical Assessments which are
undertaken as part of each placement module and demonstrates the breadth of
experience gained during these placements.
Successful completion of this record will enable competency to be demonstrated in a
range of examinations including general radiography, contrast-enhanced radiography
and CT of the head. In addition, this record demonstrates a range of experience in
other imaging modalities.
Definition of Terms
Demo’:
Demonstrated i.e. a radiographer has demonstrated this examination
to the student whilst giving an explanation of the procedure.
Assisted:
The student has undertaken this examination, non-modified technique,
with direct assistance from a radiographer.
Unassisted:
The student is capable of performing this examination, unassisted, on
an ambulatory patient, where it is not necessary to modify technique.
The student must be capable of undertaking all procedures listed here
unassisted by the end of the stage one clinical placement.
Competent:
The student is able to undertake this procedure on any patient, and is
capable of modifying technique accordingly with minimal or no
intervention from a radiographer. All competencies must be completed
by the end of the non-elective component of the stage three clinical
placement. Competent 1 and competent 2 require the student to
demonstrate the same level of competence. No additional patient
difficulty or modification of technique is required for competent 2 as
compared to competent 1; however, competent 1 and 2 must not be
signed off by the same radiographer and must be completed on
different days.
Modified Technique refers to any procedure requiring an alteration in approach e.g.
due to severe pain, immobility or the pathological condition of the patient. It can also
include those patients where different communication skills are required e.g. due to
differences in language, sensory impairment etc.
Examinations in italics, with a shaded background indicate those examinations where
infrequent numbers are undertaken and so it unlikely that competency will be
attained, although any experience of these examinations must be recorded where
possible.

The following are examinations where competency is not compulsory. These
examinations are recorded to demonstrate breadth of experience. Minimum numbers
are required, and a range of procedures MUST be documented.
Experience of a range of procedures in angiography, interventional radiography, CT,
MRI, Ultrasound and Radionuclide Imaging MUST be demonstrated. Experience of
DXA, Mammography and PET will be dependent on the individual sites placements
have been undertaken at.
OTHER MODALITIES: Angiography / Interventional / Vascular Imaging
