CHC 2DI: Culminating Assignment HerItage FaIr Task: Your task is to research an area of Canadian history, from 1914 to the present, and present your discoveries using the medium of your choice (eg. Diorama, performance piece, web-based project, PowerPoint presentation, display board, etc.). Projects will be displayed/presented as part of a class Heritage Fair. The focus of your display/presentation should be on the importance of your topic on the history of Ontario and/or Canada. The Heritage Fair is part of your culminating assignment in this course but it is also a friendly competition amongst your classmates. “Winners” of our Heritage Fair will move on to the Waterloo Region Heritage Fair and compete against students from other schools. Learning Goals: I can locate, gather, evaluate, and organize relevant research from a variety of sources. I can use this research to help me explain/demonstrate the importance of my topic on the history of Ontario and Canada. I can communicate the results of my research using appropriate terms and concepts through the medium of my choice. I can win the competition at the school level so I can compete at the Regional Heritage Fair. Important Dates: Library Work Periods: Thursday, April 10 Friday, April 11 Monday, April 14 In Class Work Period: Tuesday, April 15 Wednesday, April 16 HERITAGE FAIR: Thursday, April 17, 2014 All projects must be completed and ready to put on display at the beginning of class on the day of the Heritage Fair. Projects will be evaluated by the teacher and are worth 10% of your overall course mark. Guest judges will evaluate the projects to determine which presentations move on to the Waterloo Region Heritage Fair. Waterloo Region Heritage Fair: May 1st and 2nd, 2014 Waterloo Region Museum Includes opening and closing ceremonies, fun workshops, and of course, judging. Special awards for outstanding achievement will be given out at this level. Two projects (one from the high school level and one from the grade 7 and 8 level) will be chosen to represent our region at the Ontario Provincial Fair in Toronto on June 14th and 15th, 2014 CHC 2DI Culminating Assignment Part A: Heritage Fair Page 1 Important Information: Each student will receive a handbook that includes information regarding the Heritage Fair, valuable tips, organizers, list of possible topics, and a sample bibliography. Please see the Ontario History Fairs Association website at www.ohfa.ca , The Waterloo Region Museum website at www.waterlooregionmuseum.com, or ClassNet for further information. Guidelines: You may do this project individually or with a partner. Partners will receive the same mark so, if you choose to work with a partner, choose wisely. Please note: if your project is chosen to represent the region at the Provincial Fair, only one partner may go to Toronto. All projects must have a Canadian or Ontario history and/or heritage theme. Projects must entail some research (eg. Personal history, interviews, newspapers, books, websites, etc.). You will be required to hand in your research notes/rough work. A bibliography (a list of your sources) in proper format must be included with your project. A sample bibliography can be found on page 5 of your student handbook. If you do not include a bibliography, your project will be disqualified from the competition. Maximum size of any static display is 100cm high x 150cm wide. Presentations and performances must not exceed 10 minutes in length. If you choose to use PowerPoint, you must bring in your own laptop to allow the presentation to run continuously throughout the Heritage Fair. Evaluation: The Heritage Fair project is part of the culminating activities in this class. It is worth 10% of your overall mark in the course. Please see the attached rubric for more specific information regarding evaluation and judging. Possible Project Topics to get you started……. The personal history of a family member whose heritage has contributed to the development of the local region (cultural, economic, political, or social) The struggle faced by a multicultural group settling in a new area or the contributions of a specific ethnic group. The history of a particular business or institution (eg. A local printing shop that is wellestablished in the community). A local service group and how it came into being and the role it plays today. A major sporting event or historical event. Local government. Background on a local park or arena. Profile of a local artist or performing arts group. A tradition such as a Winter Carnival and other Festivals. The history of a local hero. See pages 6-8 of your student handbook for more ideas. Success Criteria/Checklist: I have chosen a topic that has a Canadian or Ontario history and/or heritage theme. I have gathered research about my topic from a variety of sources. I have chosen and created a medium to present my topic. My presentation is organized, creative, and shows effort. I have proofread and edited my work. My information clearly demonstrates the significance of my topic on Canadian or Ontario history. I have included a bibliography in proper format.
