SPM6 Quinn’s Rocks Bowls Club Selection Policy Introduction This policy applies to the selection process and procedures for individuals and teams who represent the club in external competitions such as pennants. The policy does not apply to social and championship games played at the club. Aim The aim of the selection policy is to provide selectors with clear procedures and guidelines to enable a transparent fair and structured selection process. Policy Statement The selectors will endeavour to consistently select the individuals and teams that will give our club the greatest chance of achieving the best result. We acknowledge that this will from time to time require valuing compatibility and experience above individual prowess. We will offer each bowler in the club the right to appeal the selectors decision, we will select without personal bias or favour. Selection Committee The selection committee consists of three members one being chairman. Members should be aware of the persons, contact no’s the day and time the committee meets. Selection Guidelines Selection should be based primarily on merit and take into consideration, current and recent form, consistency and playing ability. In the selection of sides, consideration should be given to compatibility, team dynamics and player development. Sides should be selected from top to bottom, to maximise performance and achieve the best results possible. If more members are available for a particular competition than required, the lowest side in that competition should operate a rotation policy, to ensure that every player considered being of acceptable standard is offered a fair and proportional share of games. 1 Selection Procedure Selection meetings should start from a skeleton framework of skip’s and possibly 3rds with ability levels to meet the clubs divisional obligation’s from members available. Once this framework is agreed a further build process should then be applied by all selectors, balancing the criteria required to fill the remaining positions. Names placed on the pennant board (with any changes made if required) there will also be a copy posted on the club website. In a situation with selectors having differing opinions and cannot agree, a compromise should try to be achieved by a vote; chairperson will have an overriding vote if required. The following points will be taken into consideration. Current pennant grading Evidenced results from external matches Evidenced results in club minor and major events Evidenced experience in various positions within a team Availability and commitment to play Selectors observing leadership and communication skills Selectors observing compatibility with other players Selectors observing temperament of players during games Selectors observing performance under pressure Discussions with players, coaches, managers and skips A review of results of team practice sessions Feedback and Communication Selectors should seek feedback from players as well as skips as required and always encourage constructive feedback. A formal meeting of skips on a regular basis can be held if required. 2 Selectors should endeavour to personally advise the players concerned when making changes to sides, providing feedback on the reasons for the changes. A pre pennant season meeting should always be held to communicate all relevant issues to members. This is also an opportunity for the selection committee to state their objectives for the forthcoming year. Members who wish to be considered for selection should notify selectors in the method and by the appointed time each week as set by the club. If members are unavailable for a pennant game they should ensure they fill out the unavailable book by Monday 1600hrs, also members that travel direct to venues are required to fill out the relevant book displayed by the pennant board. The selectors will always endeavour to make decisions regarding members to be fair and based on the selection policy, also to be in the best interests of Quinn’s Rocks Bowls Club. Appeal Procedure All bowlers will have the right to appeal their selection in a team and request a meeting with the selectors. The appeal should be to the chairman of selectors and should be in writing. A time and date will be agreed to meet the appellant and all the selectors to review and discuss the matter. 3
