Minutes from July 2014 Board Meeting at North Star

Meeting called at 604
Teresa stated that we are all starting over fresh. She requested that all board members participate and support the center as stated in By-Laws. We need everyone going forward to be on the same page
There was some discussion about Virginia and the same sex marriage being struck down. We should know something in 21 days this includes NC, VA, SC, MD.
Teresa will meet with Carrie when she returns from Florida. She has agreed to have us on a month to month lease and is willing to work with us. Teresa will have more information at the August board meeting.
Dirk talked about ACS and the changes that are taking place at that location. There are a lot of changes that are taking place there. Some of the state money that they have been receiving has not came through. They are trying to move into the smallest of the three spaces. Dirk believes that ACS will be fine

Fundraising/Grants. Appeal email. Corporate Sponsor packets. Teresa, Mary and Christine.
There was discussion about why we did not get Z. Smith Reynolds grant. It looks like we do not need to ask for any operation expenses; we will resubmit.
There was discussion about why we only received $2000 from Adam Foundation. There is not clear answer to this question. We will still need to find a way to have the Health Coach at the center to have some sort of program.
Dr. Jason Crandall made donation to keep us up and going for the month of July. We are paid, all utilities included, through July. There was some discussion about how much we can pay right now for rent. Teresa is going to ask Carrie if she will take $650.00 for rent until the end of the year.

Pride registrations, Greensboro (discounted rate deadline has now passed. Registration for non-profit is $125 unless anyone has a contact to get us in free or discounted.) George

Mary talked about fundraising over the next five months
Aperture Cinema contacted us to see if we will be part of their allies program; they are showing a film in September
We need to approach Fund Raising in two different ways; large and small
Mary spoke with someone at the Hispanic League There as a lot of support from Corporate donations. We need to have a fundraiser that will include businesses that celebrate diversity. We need to send these corporations information to purchase tables or sponsor event. Mary believes that we can raise about 30k . Maybe we can have Kevin Jennings come down to be keynote speaker.
Mary spoke about Equality NC announced that they will have offices in Hickory and Fayetteville
Equality NC has a agreed to come speak and join us at the next meeting
Rex stated that Aug 9thn will be 10 th anniversary He also stated that he will premier “The Way He
Looks”. This will be a fundraiser for local agencies, including North Star. This is the same night as
Mixology and they have agreed to change hours to 11pm; movie will end at 845 and donors will receive a drink ticket.
Rex has also spoke about a film festival. He wants to show 7 films over 3 days. He is looking for funding in the amount of $250. Mary talked about having film festival on the same day as our dinner. We are shooting for November 13 th -16 th
Dirk mentioned that Kevin Jennings has offered to have some board members to meet in NYC Mary talked about Kevin Jennings not being tied to a Not for profit in the area. Can we get Kevin involved in obtaining a local CEO from Winston Salem to help with the Fund Raiser?
Teresa is going to still try for grants in the area. There was some discussion and the Youth in
Transition program that has a large population of LGBTQ. Mary discussed how important it would be for all of us to get involved
Theresa and George will work on video to send in an email We are going to send this out in hopes of getting some money .

Some ideas sent for fundraising:
- Fundraising idea #1: Monthly Community open house? Let artists/businesses set up a table for a small fee where they can show there items/services? Wouldn't be much but it might draw some more traffic into the center if marketed correctly.
- Fundraising idea #2: Dixie Debutante Ball. This was an event that ACS did some years back. It was well attended at the Hawthorne Inn but not repeated (unsure why). Maybe a joint fundraiser with
ACS to bring this back?
- Labor Day Cookout - We should sponsor a community cookout for Labor Day weekend; say on
Saturday August 30th? We have just enough time to likely get this into QNotes and advertise properly.
