2012 Reflections: Make Disciples, Multiply Leaders (Psalm 145) Senior Pastor Dr. Daniel Ho Introduction One generation will commend your works to another; they will tell of your mighty acts. They will speak of the glorious splendour of your majesty, and I will meditate on your wonderful works. (Psalm 145:4-5) The Word of God reminds us that in the worship of the living God, we must meditate on the works of God. If we don't take time to contemplate and reflect, our life may not be able to achieve the greater heights that God intended for us. A life without reflection is a life missing greater heights. (cf. Lamentations 3:40) Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the LORD. (Lamentations 3:40) We need to reflect on what we have done right and what we have not done right so we can re-align ourselves. Otherwise, we might spend our lives running around like a headless chicken – heading through life without direction. We are to always reflect, contemplate and look back. Everyone ought to do this. We rejoice in the times we have walked in the ways of God. We also want to contemplate on the times we didn’t follow His ways; and therefore, to re-order our lives accordingly. Highlights Pastor Daniel pointed out four highlights in the life of the church in 2012. 1. Conferences (input for our lives) Conferences provide amazing input into our lives. This year, we were privileged to have Rev. Dr. Colton Wickramaratne, Dr. Ravi Zacharias, Sidney Mohede, Bob Fitts, Jim Yost, Edmund Chan, etc, coming to minister to us in DUMC. They add special depth, insight, understanding, encouragement, inspiration and challenge to our life. Whilst the conferences are wonderful inputs for us, and we should endeavour to attend all of them, we also need to realise that our Christian life cannot merely depend on conferences. Pastor Daniel likened conferences to steaks being served to us; however, we cannot take steak for every meal, or even every other meal. Want to be emailed “The Leap Forward” and “ZES-T” regularly? Page 1 of 8 Lesson: Have you grown as a disciple and leader? How have we grown as persons of influence? There are 5 steps for us to follow if we are to continue to grow. Steps to grow further as disciple/leader: 1. Continue to learn and obey the Word (Romans 15:4) For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. (Romans 15:4) 2. Pray and worship the Lord daily. Spend time regularly to worship and sing praises to the Lord. This is an amazing experience. 3. Join in fellowship with God’s people in church and cell group. (Hebrews 10:25) Pastor Daniel shared about one couple who came to the celebration, and once they heard about the importance of Cell Groups (CG), they found and joined a CG soon after. Even Pastor Daniel goes to CG every week. In fact, he wanted to start one new CG every year if possible. When we are part of a CG, we will soon find the blessing that comes with it. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching. (Hebrews 10:25) 4. Go for training & be equipped. There are many training available in DUMC. Make it a commitment to go. When we do that, we are sowing into our own lives and we will grow. 5. Serve and be a witness for the Lord wherever. Wherever God has put us, find a way to serve. A real disciple of Christ will always find a place to serve and minister. When we do these 5 things, we will grow and become more effective servants of Christ. Being a Christian doesn’t exempt us from problems. But having problems should make us better persons and not bitter persons. Every element deteriorates when pushed hard – however, muscles work differently. The harder we push them, the stronger they grow. Want to be emailed “The Leap Forward” and “ZES-T” regularly? Ministries (output from our lives) Our community work continues faithfully. The church reaches out to people of all race, religion and creed, and from all kinds of background. Pastor Daniel shared an example about a lady with 8 children from 2 marriages – every month supplies are given to her with no strings attached. One CG even adopted 2 of her children. Her eldest child, aged 23, got married recently and invited our sisters from the CG to attend the wedding. We get calls from people that we don’t know. We get calls from hospitals. Pastor Sam gets calls to help with drug addicts. These are the unsung heroes who serve unseen, unheard and unrecognized. If we want to make a difference and impact the community, we must be there as well. If we live only for ourselves, we will also die for ourselves. The church reaches out, unstintingly and unhesitatingly, to help the marginalized. With so many needs around, let us all find some way we can serve. Likewise our missions work carries on faithfully besides many other ministries. Pastor Daniel shared about the testimony of a Chinese man who, under demonic influence, disembowelled himself and pulled out his own intestines to the horror of his family. He was rushed to hospital and it wasn’t certain if he would survive. However, some of his family members were Christians, and they visited him in hospital and prayed for him. Miraculously, he was set free and was able to go home the next day. Today, this man and his whole family are faithfully serving in the Chinese congregation. Many brothers provide transport for the Myanmar services (which can only be held at midnight, as the Myanmar workers who attend have to work during the daytime). After the service, these Myanmar workers usually reach home at around 4.00am. They get hardly any sleep before they have to wake up for work again as early as 7.00am. Nevertheless, they still come faithfully every week, because they have experienced the love of God through the church. Everyone is important. Lesson: Servanthood are powerful touch-points to communicate Christ’s love (Eph 6:7) Pastor Daniel challenged everyone to serve. Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men (Ephesians 6:7) Want to be emailed “The Leap Forward” and “ZES-T” regularly? Dream Centre & Dream Cafe (vision of our dream) These are realization of a vision These facilities are not designed for church members, but they are designed for the community. It is meant to be a blessing to them. Pastor Daniel shared about a German lady who, when she heard that the place was open to the community at all times, asked, “Won’t things get spoilt or missing?” Indeed, many items do get damaged or go missing – eg. spoons, knives and forks, even toilet bidets and water heaters go missing. However, if things are damaged, we repair them; and if things are stolen, we replace them. We will continue to be a blessing to the community. Lesson: Deeply humbled & grateful. Pastor Daniel has met many people who told him that they are grateful for Dream Centre. The electrical engineer responsible for Dream Centre (Phase 1) often comes by for lunch and even brings his clients for business meetings. Hundreds of people (mostly nonChristian office workers from the surrounding areas) come for lunch on weekdays. As Dream Cafe is pork-free, even Malays and expatriates come as well. Not only do they get good food, but they also get it at a reasonable price. 4. 2012: Malaysia’s Year of Jubilee (burden for our nation) Crucial and prophetic year 2012 is the 50th year of Malaysia achieving nationhood. As such, it is a crucial and prophetic year, as it is the Year of Jubilee for Malaysia, where restoration takes place. Lesson: Faith, freedom and future for our land We must not leave. We want to believe in God that despite all the problems we have in our nation, we can be involved in the rebuilding of our nation. We need the best people. We pray, trust and believe God that there will be a change. Pastor Daniel encouraged everyone to meet for the monthly inter-church prayer meeting in DUMC (every last Tuesday of the month). The Challenge: 1. Youth and young adults work (future of the church) This is our future – we must invest in the lives of children, the youth and the young adults. In an urban centre like Kuala Lumpur, there are many children and young adults. A global city like Kuala Lumpur draws all the young people because of the job opportunities. There is a huge concentration of youth in the major cities because of this. We need to reach out and bring them to Jesus. Want to be emailed “The Leap Forward” and “ZES-T” regularly? Page 4 of 8 The church is the best thing that has happened to us. Why do our friends think differently? We need to change and transform their mind set. The youth ministry must double every year. If everyone can lead one to the Lord, the church doubles. There is ample time in a year for us all to lead one person to the Lord. If it’s the best teaching, why are we not sharing, and why is it not made known? There are many receptive hearts out there. We never know whom we can touch. Challenge: To Build and reach out to More. 2. Missions and evangelism (focus of our lives) Someone went to Cambodia once and has since committed to go every year. We might not go to Cambodia, but we can come together as a team or a CG for prayer and do prayer walking. Pastor Daniel shared that on Christmas Day, he attended a high tea with the PM and YB Lim Guan Eng in attendance. Pastor Daniel had met YB Lim earlier in the day when he conducted Tun Lim Kheng Yaik’s wake service. YB Lim asked Pastor Daniel whether he wanted to start a church in Penang. In fact, there was a similar opportunity in Ipoh too. When we begin to do things in a radical manner, we never know what we can achieve. Discipleship must be our priority. There are many hurting people. If we would only get closer, if we would only pay attention, we can find them. Challenge: To Obey and just do it 3. Church prayer life and our own prayer life (cf. Luke 18:1-8) (foundation for our faith) In DUMC, we preach the Word of God. But our prayer life can be improved. Come for the 14-day fast and prayer (Jan 7-20, 2013) – there is no better way to start the year. But it requires discipline. The spirit must lead the body. Pastor Daniel also challenged us to come for the prayer meeting at least once a month. When we commit to come together to pray, the spiritual atmosphere of the nation will be changed. Don’t come to pray only when we are in need. Always pray and never give up. Challenge: We need faithfulness, fervency and Faith. Page 5 of 8 A Heartfelt Grief Scripture: I am bent over and racked with pain. All day long I walk around filled with grief. (Psalm 38:6, NLT) Observation: King David was very sad, suffering from guilt because he had sinned against the Lord through committing adultery. He was depressed until he confessed his sin and was deeply sorry for what he had done (Psalms 38:18). Application: As Christians, we are human and we too get depressed at times. However, the reasons for sadness are usually very self-centred, selfish and human-like. It usually does not involve our feelings of guilt. When we seek for forgiveness, like King David, it comes with a reason – we are badly hurt, or when we are faced with supposedly “unbearable circumstances”. Response: Heavenly Father, please forgive me for living my life with the wrong approach and mindset. More often than not, I get upset, and sometimes depressed, when my existing benefits and honour are being taken away from me. And when I come and pray for forgiveness, it is usually when troubles come to me. Please forgive me for my insincere heart, and please grant me grace and understanding. Result: I need to continue spending time in the word of God and be surrounded by positive influences. Every time, before I get upset, I will pray for a conscious mind and a clear heart. When I ask for forgiveness, reflection plays an important part in assisting me to really understand my own feelings and being able to surrender everything to Him. Page 6 of 8 SERMON: 2012 Reflection – Make Disciples, Multiply Leaders Pray: All believers to reflect on their journey with Christ. All believers continue to equip themselves with trainings and other faith-building activities in order to encourage one another. We may touch lives through servanthood. All Christians to reach out and spread the Gospel. All believers to continue building the foundation of our faith through prayer. All believers continue to disciple, be discipled and lead through serving others. We will not delay to take all necessary steps that will make us grow further as a good disciple and leader in Christ. A student is not above his teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher. (Luke 6:40) MINISTRIES & EVENTS: WOW Conference 2013: Submission or Equality (28 Jan 2013) Pray: Women who are participating in this conference to be sensitive to the voice of God. Facilitators of this upcoming conference to be well prepared and equipped with godly wisdom. Those who signed up or going to sign up to be blessed from the conference. Despairing and needy souls to be healed through God’s mercy and grace during the conference. All preparations leading to the conference will be smooth and the conference will run as planned and achieve its objectives. Who can find a woman of worth? for her price is far above rubies. Page 7 of 8 MALAYSIA MY NATION: East Coast Floods Floods triggered by torrential monsoon rains had caused victims from thousands of households to evacuate their homes and seek for evacuation centres. To date, a total of 23, 307 evacuees are reported in the East Coast States (Terengganu Pahang and Kelantan). Floods were caused by heavy rains coinciding with high tides, and weather forecasts indicate more downpours to come. Six casualties have been reported so far. Pray: God’s grace, peace and love to be with all the victims. All stranded victims to be evacuated as soon as possible. Physical and psychological health and strength for all evacuees in the relief centres. Safe traffic on the road during this rainy season. Awareness on the importance of hygiene and cleanliness especially during this monsoon season. Families of the deceased to have peace and comfort. Health and education for flood victims about the risk and threats of consuming unboiled water during the monsoon season. Children not to play with floodwaters and will be protected from water-borne diseases such as cholera, typhoid fever, hepatitis A and leptospirosis. Do not learn the ways of the nations or be terrified by signs in the sky, though the nations are terrified by them. (Jeremiah 10:2) A TRANSFORMED WORLD: Assault of Children and Women Worldwide. Recently, news of sexism, attacks, assault and killing of women and children has been reported worldwide. In India, a young woman was gang raped and soon died in hospital after battling for her life. In US, many children and adults were massacred at schools by people wielding firearms. In Pakistan, the Talibans are attacking young female students in protest of rights and education given to the “inferior” gender. Tragically, the list goes on. Pray: God’s divine intervention. Women and children at risk to be protected by our God’s mercy. God to connect all eyes and heart of Christians to see and feel for all the victims and their loved ones. Governments of respective countries to continue to provide support and systems that protect the rights and safety of women and children. Clarity and compassion for all volunteers, prayer warriors, missionaries, authorities, and even the culprits. Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. Then they were glad that the waters were quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven.
