NSNA® Treasurers FALL MEMO To: From: Re: Date: NSNA Treasurers Kelly Bell, NSNA Secretary-Treasurer and Chair, Finance Committee, secretarytreasurer@nsna.org Fall Memo September 2015 Greetings to you all, and welcome back to the school year! I hope everyone had a relaxing and productive summer; whether you spent it continuing your studies, pursuing a summer job, traveling, or simply getting some well-deserved rest. Special congratulations to all you newly elected or appointed treasurers! The beginning of the school year is an exciting time. New classes and catching up with old friends make the transition back to school fresh. Planning for the year’s activities in your local NSNA chapters will set the stage and motivate your chapters toward a productive year. As you plan your budgets and activities for the year, know that it is completely normal to feel a little nervous or uneasy in your new role as treasurer. It is an important job! However, I and the rest of the Board of Directors are here to help you! Feel free to peruse the resources on the NSNA website, particularly the Treasurer’s Handbook and our tips for filing taxes for state organizations. A few things to bring to your attention… Leadership U Treasurer’s Certificate Workshop I invite all treasurers, new, old, or aspiring, to attend the Leadership U Treasurer's Certificate Workshop at MidYear Conference, from 10 AM-3 PM on Thursday, November 5th. We will be discussing fiduciary responsibility as a treasurer, how to keep complete and accurate financial records, and good policies to implement in your own organizations. It will also be a good forum for exchanging ideas between chapters. Upon completion of an open-book test at the end of the workshop, you will receive a Leadership U Treasurer’s Certificate. Please make plans to join us for this program! Send an email to nsna@nsna.org (Att: Dev Persaud) and let us know if you are planning to attend. Treasurer’s Workshop Whether you are able to make it to the Leadership U Treasurer’s Certificate Workshop or not, please also consider joining us for this shorter workshop on Friday, November 6, from 3:30 PM- 4:30 PM. It would also be a great refresher for those treasurers who have perhaps taken the Leadership U workshop last year! Finance Roundtable Discussion All those interested in finance, either as a treasurer or as another leader in a local or state chapter, please join me at the Finance Roundtable Discussion at the MidYear Career Planning Conference. This will be a good opportunity for some informal discussion, and I hope to see many of you there. Robert V. Piemonte Financial Excellence Award It is not too early to begin gathering materials and amassing records to apply for the Robert V. Piemonte Financial Excellence Award! Look for more information from me on how to be successful in applying for this award, including tips on filing taxes for your state organizations. If there’s anything I can do to help you, or any advice I can give on how to apply for this award, please let me know. Also, please refer to the newly updated Awards and Honors Booklet for general information about this award. Tax Reminder! Organizations which are eligible to file Form 990-N (e-Postcard) can still do so; there is no penalty assessment for late filing the e-Postcard, but an organization that fails to file required ePostcard (or information returns – Forms 990 or 990-EZ) for three consecutive years will automatically lose its tax exempt status. Best wishes to all of you for a productive and exciting school year! Good luck in your positions, and I look forward to seeing many of you at MidYear Conference, November 5-8, 2015 in Atlanta, Georgia. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or suggestions, or if I can be of assistance to you in any way!
