1. The accompanying materials described three job satisfaction scales used in a master’s thesis conducted
here a few years ago. The data are in a file called SCFILE. Conduct reliability analysis of each of the three
job satisfaction scales – WKITSELF, OVERALL, and OTHER. Write a 1-page recommendation
concerning whether each of the scales is appropriately reliable and whether each should be used as is or
should be revised based on the reliability analysis. If a scale needs to be revised, suggest how.
Submit output from the SPSS Reliability procedure for each scale.
2. Compute Cronbach’s standardized alpha MANUALLY from the following data.
Use the Analyze -> Correlate -> Bivariate to get the correlation between each pair of items. Then follow the
example on page 11 of Lecture 1, showing the steps in the computation of standardized Alpha.
Show the steps you carried out beginning on a separate page from the answer to 1. Include a page or two of
SPSS output to show that you used the Bivariate procedure to compute the correlations.
Carry out all intermediate results to at least 3 decimal places. Your answer must agree with mine to the 2nd
decimal place.
