More than 40 Million Americans Expected to Participate in 9/11 Annual Day of Service
Spanish language website and PSAs launched
Thousands of service projects, and simple good deeds, along with prayer and remembrance, will mark
the 13th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks
Volunteer projects in New York, Washington, Dallas, Miami, Ft, Lauderdale, Phoenix,
Los Angeles, Boston and many other cities across the nation
WHAT:
The federally-recognized 9/11 National Day of Service (“9/11 Day”), organized annually by the 9/11
nonprofit MyGoodDeed, is expected to draw more than 40 million participants in observance of the
anniversary of 9/11 this year, transforming September 11 into the nation’s largest annual day of
charitable engagement. Large-scale volunteer service projects are available for media coverage in
New York City; Washington, DC; Dallas; Phoenix; Miami and Ft. Lauderdale (see more details below).
Affiliated projects are also planned in Los Angeles and Boston. A new Spanish language version of the
911day.org website is also being launched, as are Spanish language PSAs encouraging service. (Spanish
speaking spokesperson is available.)
Prominent celebrities, major employers, influential nonprofits and tens of thousands of individuals will
begin posting supportive messages on the morning of 9/11, at 8:46 AM ET, through social media,
including via Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Twitter hash tag: #911Day.
This year’s 9/11 Day campaign will include:

Large-scale volunteer service projects in major cities that will engage students in charitable
activities in observance of 9/11, with many benefitting veterans and first responders. These
projects will be organized in partnership with HandsOn affiliates, and in Washington, DC, with
the Corporation for National & Community Service, KaBOOM!, and the George Washington
University Freshman Day of Service. (Schedules for these projects are included below.)

9/11 Day organizers will be ringing the NYSE Bell on the morning of 9/11, joined by George
Martin, retired NY Giants Super Bowl XXI champion and co-captain, who walked 3,003 miles
across the country(“a Journey for 9/11”) to raise millions of dollars to help provide medical
treatment to ailing rescue and recovery workers of Ground Zero.

ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND: With widespread support from the 9/11 community, the 9/11 nonprofit
MyGoodDeed launched the 9/11 Day Observance in 2003 as a lasting tribute to the 9/11 victims and
those who rose in service in response to the attacks. In 2009 the organization successfully secured
passage of bi-partisan legislation that officially established 9/11 as a “National Day of Service and
Remembrance” under federal law. Today 9/11 has become the nation’s largest annual day of charitable
engagement, with more than 47 million people participating from all 50 states and many nations
throughout the world in 2013. Among the many prominent individuals who support 9/11 Day are:
Snoop Dog, Lady Gaga, Samuel L. Jackson, Dr. Oz, Terrence Howard, Gary Sinise, Selena Gomez, Kevin
Spacey, Demi Lovato, Tim McGraw, Kathleen Turner, Mickey Rourke, Denis Leary, J and many
others. This year’s funding and/or supporting organizations include Program Leaders American Express

9/11 DAY SERVICE PROJECT DETAILS:
Ft. Lauderdale/Broward
Location: Keystone Halls VA Residence, 1420 SW 3rd Ave, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33315
Date: Saturday, September 6
Time: 8:30 a.m. volunteer check-in. Project ends at 1:00 p.m.
Description: Keystone Halls is a home that transitions a person from a life of homelessness, addiction and relapse
to a new life of stable recovery, in which the recovered person is able to completely support themselves. Keystone
Halls houses and assists many homeless veterans who are in recovery. Volunteers will honor the men and women
who have served our country by revitalizing the center with painting, landscaping, and garden creation, among
other project components.
Miami
Location: Holmes Elementary 1175 NW 67th Street, Miami, FL 33150
Date: Thursday, September 11
Time: 8:30 a.m. volunteer check-in. Project ends at noon.
Description: Volunteers will pack care kits for service personnel overseas and create "Thank You" gifts for local
firehouses and other first responders. Volunteers will be preparing the edible garden beds in the outdoor
classroom for the fall planting season and painting a mural that welcomes a "Spirit of Unity." The school will adopt
September as “Heroes Month” and decorate the hallways, main office and classrooms with images, drawings, and
assignments related to heroism.
Washington, DC (Three projects)
Locations:
DC FEMS, Engine 32, 2425 Irving St SE, Washington, DC 20020; and Department of Parks and Recreation, Fort
Davis Recreation Center, 1400- 41st SE, Washington, DC 20020
Date: Saturday, September 6
Time: 12:45 p.m. volunteer check-in at DC Fire Station Engine 32. Project ends at 4:30 p.m.
Description: This is a unique project in partnership with George Washington University’s Freshman Day of Service,
inspired by the events of 9/11. Volunteers will help restore two essential community assets; DC Fire Station Engine
19 and the Department of Parks and Recreation Center. Both are located in Ward 7 of Washington, DC.
Location: Inspired Teaching Demonstration Public Charter School, 301 Douglas Street NE SC 20002
Date: Thursday, September 11
Time: 10:30 a.m. Ribbon Cutting Ceremony; Work begins at 11:30 a.m.
Description: KaBOOM! is partnering with the Corporation for National & Community Service and MyGoodDeed to
build a playground at the Inspired Teaching Demonstration Public Charter School in Washington, DC. Inspired
Teaching Demonstration Public Charter School is located in Northeast Washington, DC. The school serves primarily
a low-income population of 300 students. The primary role of the teacher at the Inspired Teaching School is to
facilitate students’ problem-solving and investigation of new concepts and ideas. The school lacks sufficient
playground equipment for all of its students.
Phoenix
Location: Starlight Park Elementary School, 7960 W. Osborn Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85033
Date: Saturday, September 6
Time: 7:30 a.m. volunteer check-in. Project ends at noon.
Description: Starlight Park serves approximately 920 students. One hundred percent of its students receive free or
reduced lunch services based on their economic status. Integration of a special “Hallway of Heroes” lesson plan for
students combined with a service project for volunteers that will include revitalizing outdoor play areas, creating a
butterfly/hummingbird garden, adding benches in the garden area and in the parent waiting area, painting the
cafeteria, and other activities.
New York
Location: PS M140 – Nathan Strauss Public School, 123 Ridge Street New York, NY 10002
Date: Thursday, September 11
Time: 9:30 a.m. volunteer check-in. Project ends at 2:00 p.m.
Description: PS/MS 140 is a small school where teachers foster a sense of closeness and productivity. It is also a
school that faces considerable challenges. A growing number of its students live in homeless shelters, and many
have moved from place to place with such frequency that they have never been at one school long enough to
master basic skills. More than 450 students, 78% of whom receive free lunch, attend grades K through 8th.
Volunteers will engage in painting, organizing and other revitalization activities.
Dallas
Location: American Red Cross - 4800 Harry Hines Blvd, Dallas, TX 75235
Date: Thursday, September 11, 2014
Time: 9:00 a.m. volunteer check-in. Project ends at 1:00 p.m.
Activity: Volunteer employees will assist in helping communities in the Dallas area prepare for disasters by
providing preparedness education and life-saving information to about 1,000 homes in areas considered high risk.
Volunteers will canvass select neighborhoods in Dallas to talk with residents and distribute door
hangers/information on safety/prevention and tips for creating an emergency plan as well as how to
download/use the new Red Cross app.
