UAV’s with a maximum takeoff weight not exceeding 2 kilograms, that are operated within a visual line of sight (not including model aircraft or an autonomous UAV) and are NOT operated within at least 5 nautical miles of a built up area: a. Ensure that you have read and follow the Transport Canada Exemption from sections 602.41 and 603.66 of the Canadian Aviation Regulations (available on line at http://www.tc.gc.ca/civilaviation/regserv/affairs/exemptions/docs/en/2880.htm) and that this exemption will apply to your UAV. UAV’s piloted outside of the terms and conditions of this exemption will be subject to the requirements of a Special Flight Operations Certificate (SFOC) or the exemption noted below for 2). b. Ensure that you have read and follow the Transport Canada Advisory Circular (AC) No. 600-002 – General Safety Practices – Model Aircraft and Unmanned Air Vehicle Systems. UAV’s with a maximum takeoff weight exceeding 2 kilograms but not exceeding 25 kilograms, with a maximum calibrated airspeed of 87 knots or less, that are operated within a visual line of sight: (not including model aircraft or autonomous UAV’s): a. Ensure that you have read and follow the Transport Canada Exemption from sections 602.41 and 603.66 of the Canadian Aviation Regulations (available on line at http://www.tc.gc.ca/civilaviation/regserv/affairs/exemptions/docs/en/2879.htm ) and that this exemption will apply to your UAV. UAV’s piloted outside of the terms and conditions of this exemption will be subject to the requirements of a Special Flight Operations Certificate (SFOC). b. Please note that this Exemption is much more restrictive than 1) above. c. Ensure that you have read and follow the Transport Canada Advisory Circular (AC) No. 600-002 – General Safety Practices – Model Aircraft and Unmanned Air Vehicle Systems. UAV’s with a takeoff weight exceeding 25 kilograms or a smaller UAV that is operating outside of the terms and conditions of the exemptions above: a. You must read and understand all of the legislation, rules and regulations that apply to your exemption or your Special Flight Operations Certificate. b. Only UAV’s that are the property of the University of Calgary or those that are formally leased/loaned to the University under contract with another company may be used for these purposes. Privately owned UAV’s cannot be covered under the University’s insurance, nor can they be used for University research purposes. c. You are required to have the following documents with you at all times while piloting such aircraft: i. A copy of the Exemption from a) above. ii. A Certificate of Insurance (proof of liability insurance coverage). iii. The pilot’s name, address and telephone number. iv. A copy of the UAV system operating limitations. d. You cannot operate a UAV within eight (8) hours after consuming alcohol. e. All individuals piloting UAV’s on behalf of the University of Calgary must request a Certificate of Insurance through the Risk Management and Insurance department in order to operate the UAV. Certificates of Insurance may only be requested by Employees, who may also complete the request on behalf of a student in their department. If a student is intended to pilot the aircraft, they must be registered as a student in the semester in which they will be piloting the aircraft and they must have a supervisor indicated on this form. The pilot is responsible to ensure that they are appropriately trained to pilot such craft, that the UAV is maintained appropriately according to manufacturer’s specifications and that the UAV is checked prior to each use to ensure that it is in a fit and safe state for use. You must obtain written permission from the owner(s) of the property on which the UAV intends to take off/launch from and/or land/recover on. If you are flying over private property, you will also be required to have written permission from the landowner and to note any restrictions placed by the landowner (distance from domestic animals, etc.) You are responsible to also be aware of any privacy or trespassing laws and bylaws that your research may be subject to. f. g. h. i.
