It was unbelievable for me to see the
entire village lit up by solar energy and
to experience how power is being
produced and suddenly the entire
information of production, distribution
and maintenance was in our backyard.

The scouts in Falkenstein, Köniz understood
the interplay between education and
sustainability early on. Receiving the Bern
energy prize and the title of the first
"Minergie"* (low energy) scout centre in
Switzerland are two examples of how
successful their efforts have been.
Internationalisation by means of training
courses at the Kandersteg International
Scout Centre (KISC) will now spread the
solar message like wildfire.”

Why go solar?
The solar cooker is one of the popular
activities at the solar workshop, housed in
Kandersteg International Scout Centre this
summer, where solar experts are training
scout leaders from all around the world in
solar energy with a focus on activities for
scouts. Despite the constantly changing
weather conditions in the Swiss valley the
program gets a lot of attention from the
scouts. They are having fun in the sun!

I started with Greenpeace earlier this year
when I decided to nurture my desire to do
voluntary work. Just like other South
Africans that came before me I realised that
I can be the change I want to see in the
world. What better way then to
commemorate the birth day of a great Icon.
18th July 2014 in South Africa is Mandela
day.

Unfortunately, after graduation I realized,
that there was very little I could do without
computer literacy. Happily the Sarah
Obama Solar Learning Centre offered
computer courses. It was here I discovered
the solar training programme, an
opportunity that changed my life, but first I
finished the much needed computer course
before so that, enrolling on the solar
project, initiated by Solafrica (a NGO that
spun-off from the Greenpeace youth solar
programme).
