HYDROCARBON ELIMINATING REMEDIATION ORGANISMS (HERO’s)
DESCRIPTION
HERO’s are a ready to use formula of stabilized, naturally occurring nonsporogenic microbes. These microbes
provide for maximum degradation of hydrocarbons; grease and oil, and other organics. HERO’s eliminate
surface, substrate and waterborne pollutants by converting hydrocarbons into carbon dioxide and water.
MAJOR ADVANTAGES
• Begin to work immediately unlike conventional microbe technology that requires 24 hour laboratory
pre-germination to activate
• Completely degrades hydrocarbons; converting them into carbon dioxide and water
• Removes contaminant associated odours
• Eliminates costly pollutant removal and disposal processes
• Remediates secondary containment areas
• Does not harm plants, terrestrial animals or aquatic life
• Can be sprayed on surface or injected into substrate
• Will not etch concrete
• Stable at a wide range of temperatures (4 - 43°C)
• Stable in wide range of pHs (4 to 11)
• Minimum 12 month shelf life
• Does not contain VOC's
• Non-hazardous
• Non-flammable
BASIC USES
Exceptional floor cleaner; industrial plants, machine shops and warehouses.
Environmental remediation; oil spills, marine bilge tanks, ground water and soil contamination.
Grease trap and drain maintenance; reclaim pits in car and truck equipment washes.
Superior odour control; septic tanks, ponds and lagoons.

HERO’s APPLICATION GUIDE
CONTAMINATED CONCRETE FLOORS
Cleaning contaminated floors is an ongoing problem for the industrial sector. Widely used cleaning methods
involving detergents and caustics remove or disperse hydrocarbons from the surface of concrete. However they
have no effect on contaminants that have leached into the pores of the concrete. HERO’s not only safely and
efficiently clean concrete surfaces; they also migrate into its pores, totally digesting all hydrocarbons, converting
them to carbon dioxide and water. This process eliminates common adhesion problems for coating floors.
HERO’s will eradicate a number of contaminants, including motor oil, cutting oil, hydraulic oil, gasoline, diesel,
heating fuels, fats (animal and vegetable), grease, solvents, alcohols and sugars. Cleaning with microbes leaves
no residue, so the surface can be coated as soon as it is dry enough per the coating manufacturers’ moisture
recommendation.
It is important to remember that HERO’s are not an enzyme. They are not a detergent and do not disperse oil.
HERO’s are living microbes that eat hydrocarbons. They need the hydrocarbon food source to survive. Once their
food source is gone, the microbes die out. HERO’s do not leave any residue.
PROCEDURE
Step 1: For optimal results ensure pH level of treatment surface is within 5 – 8 range.*
• If surface is too alkaline spray lightly with mixture of water & white vinegar until pH level
neutralises.
• If surface is too acidic spray lightly with mixture of water & sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)
until pH level neutralises.
Step 2:
Wet the floor and apply HERO’s. Water serves two purposes; the microbes need a moist climate to
work, and water aids the mobility of the HERO’s, giving them the greatest opportunity to come into
contact with hydrocarbons.
Note: Ensure water is also within recommended pH range.
Step 3:
Agitate. Agitation helps disperse the microbes and encourage break down of the oil for faster
digestion. Agitate the floor periodically by broom or similar application and ensure the floor is kept
moist while the HERO’s are working. The time needed for cleaning will vary from 30 minutes to several
hours, depending on the level of contamination. Keep in mind that some floors have been exposed to
oil for many years, and may need a few days for the microbes to completely digest all the
contamination.
Step 4:
Rinse the floor. HERO’s can be rinsed to a drain, or rinse and shop vac the microbes from the floor.
Dry the floor thoroughly. Floor coating may then be applied according to manufacturer’s
recommendation.
*HERO’s are stable in a pH range of 4 – 11; however their efficacy will improve if surface is within neutral pH
levels.
