Zero the Hero
One of my jobs is to stand for ‘none’,
For example when all the Pop Ups have gone.
I have two names – ‘Nought’ and ‘Zero’,
But my friends all call me Zero the Hero.
1 was happy and standing with pride.
Along came Zero the Hero, and pushed him aside.
‘Ooh!’ said number 1, ‘Look I’m a 10’
‘Ooh!’ said Zero the Hero, ‘I’ll do it again’.
2 was happy and standing with pride.
Along came Zero the Hero, and pushed him aside.
‘Ooh!’ said number 2, ‘Look I’m a 20’
‘Ooh!’ said Zero the Hero, ‘I’ll do it a-plenty’.
So he pushed and he shoved,
And the numbers moved aside.
‘This is fun, fun, fun, Yes it’s fun!’ he cried.

‘What’s all this?’ said Zero’s friend.
‘Move on over, I’m going to stand on the end!’
When you start to learn to count,
You’ll notice Zero has no amount.
He adds no more and takes away none,
But his job’s a very important one.
Everytime the numbers move up a place,
It’s Zero the Hero who guards this space.
And it’s Zero who makes all the numbers learn,
To stand in line and take a turn.
