Dear Colleagues,
Please help us to promote two upcoming events that we hope will be of interest to
your students.
First, Chicago State annually sponsors a High School History Competition on the
theme of ethnic and community history. The Fifteenth Annual CSU History Day will
occur xxxxxx, and we encourage your school to participate. We enclose the call for
projects as well as a tentative schedule for History Day.
Second, Chicago State also sponsors an annual United Nations Model Simulation
event for high schools, and this year's is scheduled to occur xxxxxxx. Students in World

We hope you will make plans for your classes to attend. If you have any
questions, please do not hesitate to contact us as well.

CALL FOR PAPERS AND PRESENTATIONS
FIFTEENTH ANNUAL HIGH SCHOOL HISTORY DAY
CHICAGO STATE UNIVERSITY
XXXXXXX
sponsored by
THE CHICAGO STATE HISTORY CLUB
The History Club of Chicago State University, together with the Department of History,
Philosophy, and Political Science, invites submissions of written and poster presentations for the
Fourteenth Annual Chicago State University High School History Day Competition. On
XXXXXXX, students from area high schools will visit Chicago State University for a history
day. Judges will review projects for the awarding of prizes. The general meeting also will
include an address and a lunch for students and their teachers.
The theme for the History Day competition is "Oral and Ethnic History: Telling
Our Stories". The History Club is interested to encourage the exploration and communication of
history about subjects of interest in the lives of students, their families, and the cultural and ethnic
organizations and institutions which inform their lives. Often these stories have not been written
or published formally as much as conveyed from person to person. The stories may include
depictions of life for immigrants to this country, analyses of social institutions, customs, and
practices of ethnic traditions, and accounts of the relationship between local events and more
national and international currents, themes, and dynamics of encounter. The subject(s) for the
presentations may be of any kind, but some suggestions are the family or family members,
community associations, churches or religious institutions, social and civic organizations, or the
history of one's school
A submitted presentation must have an analytical as well as descriptive focus. The
project should be situated in broader contexts, be they local, regional, national, or international. It
also should involve critical thinking and the use of primary and secondary sources; these sources
should be distinguished in a bibliography, preferably with annotation.
The presentation may be of any format, but all submissions will be grouped for purposes
of adjudication in two categories: POSTER presentations and OTHER presentations (written
essays and internet-based projects). Poster presentations must include a written analysis of the
poster and bibliography). Written presentations may be of any standards format but must not
exceed thirty typewritten pages. Internet-based presentations must utilize Microsoft PowerPoint
or some other reasonable basis for presentation.
Prizes will be awarded for two divisions: Ninth and Tenth Graders (Division I) and
Eleventh and Twelfth Graders (Division II). For each category, the top three individuals and top
three schools will receive awards. In addition there will be a competition for the best overall
project, regardless of classification, and the best overall school, as well as for the most creative
project.
Participants should register their project titles and category by February 18, 2010. Copies
of written presentations should be submitted by February 18, 2010. If technology or technical
assistance is needed for an internet-based project, written notification is needed by February 18,
2010, or the project may be disqualified.
All questions and notification of participation should be directed to:
