Finding an Internship: Resources
It is the responsibility of the student to find an internship and to propose it to the Department
Internship Coordinator. While Department Internship Coordinators are intended to be a resource
for student interns, students should lead the effort to find a position. The following resources
may help in the search for an acceptable internship.
A few items that students may consider when searching for an internship:
• What does the student want to do after graduation?
• Where does the student want to live after graduation?
• Does the student have friends, relatives, etc in other cities around the country/world?
• What is the student’s ultimate “dream job” after graduation?
• Who does the student know? Who do those people know?
• What are the application deadlines?
By doing some self-reflection and answering questions such as these, students may be able to
better develop their internship goals.
Networking
Networking is a process of using existing or newly developed acquaintances to help in the job
search. Statistics show that:
• Nearly 75% of all jobs are acquired through some type of networking.
• 80-90% of the time, employers will hire people they already know.
• 85-90% of all jobs are never formally advertised.
A student’s network may consist of, but is not limited to: immediate family, relatives, friends,
church members, bishoprics, university advisors, faculty, former employers, etc. Students can
utilize their network by sending emails, making phone calls, making personal visits and so forth.
