Department of Entomology
College of Agricultural and Natural Sciences
Vector-Pathogen Interactions
Specialization: Molecular, physiological, and behavioral interactions between pathogens and
their arthropod vectors
Level: Assistant Professor and Assistant Entomologist, 9-month appointment, 75% Organized
Research (OR)/25% Instruction and Research (I&R)
Qualifications: Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree in Entomology or a related discipline. The
successful candidate must have strong training and experience with modern approaches to the
study of aspects of pathogen-vector interactions and vector biology.
Available: This is a career position available July 1, 2014 in the Department of Entomology and
the Agricultural Experiment Station, University of California, Riverside
(http://cnas.ucr.edu/about/anr/).
Research: The understanding of the interactions of arthropods and the pathogens they may
transmit will be key to solving a multitude of disease and pest issues that occur globally as well
as in California. The successful candidate will develop a strong basic and/or applied research
program investigating the molecular, physiological, and/or behavioral basis of arthropodtransmitted pathogens. The successful candidate will have a strong background in elucidating the
interactions between vectors and pathogens that are critical to successful disease transmission.
Areas of research emphasis may include the exploration of pathways that are intimately involved
with pathogen transmission and acquisition, the development of new genetic strategies, or
approaches to be used to control diseases that result from arthropod-vectored pathogens. This
position complements the department’s international strengths in vector biology, medical and
veterinary entomology, and population genetics of insects. This position interfaces with the
existing genomic, agricultural, and biomedical programs on campus and with research programs
within the Center for Disease Vector Research, the Institute for Integrative Genome Biology, and
the Center for Invasive Species Research.
Teaching: Teaching responsibilities include supervision of graduate students, participation in
undergraduate biological science instruction in introductory biology, microbiology, molecular
biology and/or physiology, as well as a graduate course taught in an area of interest. Teaching
interactions with the interdepartmental programs in Genetics, Genomics and Bioinformatics
(GGB); Evolution, Ecology and Organismal Biology (EEOB); and/or Cellular, Molecular and
Developmental Biology (CMDB) are encouraged.
Application: Applications should include a curriculum vitae, statements of research interests,
teaching interests and philosophy, up to three select reprints of publications or manuscripts in
press, and arrange for four confidential letters of recommendation to be sent to:
https://aprecruit.ucr.edu/apply/JPF00057
Questions regarding this position should be directed to Professor William Walton, Chair of the
Vector- Pathogen Interactions Search Committee at william.walton@ucr.edu
Evaluation of applications will begin February 1, 2014, but the position will remain open until
filled.
