Workshop 3 (Special Workshop) Theme Date Venue Language Organizer Description "Strengthening of transnational NGO networks for historical reconciliation and peacebuilding in East Asia" 13:00-15:00 Sunday, June 22, 2014 Room No. 305 English; Korean/Japanese interpretation for discussions, if required International NGO History Forum for Peace in East Asia This workshop will outline the work of the International NGO History Forum and explore agendas related to history and peace in upcoming conferences. The Forum seeks to share views on history with local and international civilsociety organizations that are active in various fields around building peace in East Asia through the understanding and reconciliation of historical experiences. The NGO History Forum hopes to promote the role of NGOs in peace building in East Asia to enhance solidarity and networking among NGOs. Transnational networking among NGOs is recommended for resource sharing, exchanges of experiences, and formation of public discourse in the global civil society. Networking also enhances a coalition or strategic alliance among NGOs in dealing with local or global agendas as well as promoting capacity building and empowerment of civil society. This year, the NGO History Forum holds its conference in Tokyo. This NGO Conference seeks to establish possible collaboration and networks with overseas NGOs and research institutes to develop our future action plans and agendas for the 2015 main international NGO conferences to be held in Seoul. This workshop will be a round-table discussion with invited experts from different regions. Each speaker will present proposals and suggestions for historical reconciliation and peacebuilding in East Asia based on his or her experiences. Participants will identify practical ways to consolidate peace initiatives and promote further collaborations through NGO networking and joint follow-ups for the future. Some ideas for discussion: 1. What are your specific experiences and challenges about the theme of this workshop? 2. Could you present best practices or advice that can enhance historical reconciliation and peacebuilding in Northeast Asia from your experience of your region? 3. What kind of joint follow-up programs or initiatives can we adopt that will promote our collaboration and networks to contribute to reconciliation and peace in the international community as well as in East Asia? 4. In this context, please identify constructive ideas or suggestions as we set the agenda of the 2015 International NGO Conference on History and Peace to be held in Seoul, Korea next year.
